An industry long squeezed by geopolitical premiums is now enjoying a 60-day cost breather. After Iran announced free transit through the Strait of Hormuz, Brent crude fell more than $10 from its year-to-date high within weeks, directly opening a price-reduction channel for upstream chemical fiber feedstocks.
Transmission to Industrial Clusters The oil price drop is not evenly distributed. For polyester clusters in Shengze, Changxing, and Xiaoshan, PX and MEG account for 60%-70% of import costs. Previous channel congestion caused arrival delays and spot premiums, lifting inventory costs more than 20% above normal. Now, with low-cost cargoes arriving in bulk, the production cost per ton of polyester chip could drop by 300-500 yuan, directly restoring processing margins that had been squeezed to breakeven.
Keqiao's fabric market feels a more indirect benefit. Although grey fabric prices haven't followed immediately, weavers' purchasing sentiment has clearly improved. Factories that had operated at low utilization due to high feedstock costs for three months are now tentatively restocking polyester filament and nylon. This restocking was notably visible in Jiangsu and Zhejiang markets in late June, with some POY and FDY specifications seeing rare queuing for pickup.
Structural Constraints of the Window But it's crucial to recognize this recovery is a one-time cost concession, not a fundamental demand improvement. Customs data show China's textile and apparel exports fell about 5% year-on-year from January to May 2026. Domestic sales are similarly weak, with home textile and apparel brands ordering in 'small batch, multiple shipment' patterns, unwilling to build long-term inventory. This means even with lower feedstock prices, end-user procurement won't surge.
More critically, the 60-day policy window imposes time urgency. If Iran resumes fees or geopolitical tensions re-emerge after expiry, oil prices could snap back, leaving factories with high-cost inventory and low product prices. For SMEs reliant on external financing, this inventory cycle mismatch risk is particularly lethal.
