When protective clothing is no longer just armor but begins to pursue breathability, comfort and low carbon, the safety protective textile industry is undergoing a profound transformation. Signals from CINTE26 are clear: protective performance is merely the entry ticket, while thermal-wet comfort, recyclability and intelligent response are becoming new competitive dimensions.

Exhibition Overview: From Single Breakthroughs to Systematic Solutions

On September 2, at the 19th China International Trade Fair for Industrial Textiles and Nonwovens (CINTE26), experts from Donghua University and the Shanghai Fire Research Institute of MEM visited ten companies including Tayho, Yihu and Zhongfang New Materials. The technological paths clearly reflect the industry's evolution. Tayho highlighted its recycled meta-aramid loop technology and T2T closed-loop textile recycling system, directly addressing the pain points of high energy consumption and difficult recycling in the chemical fiber industry. Yihu introduced rare earth functional materials into antibacterial textiles, providing new ideas for multi-functional protective clothing.

Notably, Zhongwei Chemical Fiber, as the first domestic enterprise to master nylon 66 airbag yarn production, has supplied products to vehicle manufacturers in bulk, marking a substantial step in the localization of key raw materials. Beijing Bangwei's highly breathable electrospun nanofiber membrane demonstrated a solution balancing protection and breathability, tackling the industry's chronic issue of stuffiness. These cases indicate that leading companies are no longer satisfied with single protective indicators but are shifting towards systematic solutions covering materials, structure and finishing.

Industry Trends: Three Directions Reshape Competitive Logic

Professor Si Yang from Donghua University summarized three major characteristics: functionalization, greenization and intelligentization, which actually outline the competitive framework for the next five to ten years. Functionalization is no longer simply flame retardancy or arc protection but evolves towards extreme environment resistance and multi-functional composite, as exemplified by Shaanxi Yuanfeng's arc-rated clothing that passes the new PetroChina standard and Baoding Sanyuan's 1000kV live-line shielding suit.

Greenization is moving from concept to reality. Tayho's zero-carbon polyester series and T2T system, along with Jiangsu Kexu's technological accumulation in green recycled materials, show that 'low carbon' is becoming a quantifiable product attribute. However, experts also reminded that recycling technologies still face high costs and imperfect collection systems, so industrialization remains distant.

The direction of intelligentization is clearer—protective equipment is shifting from passive isolation to active sensing and response. Although intelligent wearable products have not yet appeared on a large scale at this exhibition, intelligent transformation of manufacturing processes and electronic integration of end products are regarded as an inevitable path. This implies that future protective clothing may not just be clothing but a data terminal.

Industry Challenges: Comfort, Standards and Cross-Sector Integration

While affirming technological breakthroughs, the expert group also pointed out two key bottlenecks. First, comfort remains the biggest obstacle to the popularization of protective clothing. Many high-performance fabrics ignore thermal-wet comfort after ensuring safety indicators, leading frontline workers to refuse long-term wear. The case of Shaanxi Yuanfeng shows that lightweight, comfortable and multi-functional upgrading is the direction, but finding the optimal balance between protective performance and wearing experience still requires collaborative research in materials science and ergonomics.

Second, standards lag behind innovation. Professor Si Yang emphasized that in special protection fields with extremely high safety requirements, the application of new materials must advance in tandem with standards and operational norms. Currently, some domestic sub-sectors lack standards or have outdated updates, making it difficult for new technologies to quickly enter the market. For example, although there is a new PetroChina standard for arc-rated clothing, dedicated standards for firefighting and metallurgy are still incomplete, directly affecting buyers' confidence in selection.

Moreover, the depth of cross-sector integration determines the industry's ceiling. The intersection of industrial textiles with aerospace, medical and health, and emergency rescue requires companies to look beyond textiles and proactively connect with downstream needs. Zhongfang New Materials' approach to extending products to automotive auxiliary materials and pipeline repair provides a reference-worthy example.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Don't only check protective certificates; test the fabric's thermal-wet comfort (e.g., moisture vapor transmission rate, thermal resistance) and require suppliers to provide wear trial data. - Pay attention to recycled material certifications, prioritize products with T2T or recycled fiber traceability to meet increasingly stringent ESG audits. - For intelligent protective equipment, conduct small-batch trials first to verify data collection stability and compatibility with existing management systems before large-scale promotion.

For Manufacturers - Incorporate 'comfort' into R&D KPIs; after meeting basic properties like flame retardancy and arc protection, focus on breakthroughs in moisture wicking and lightweight technology. - Actively track standard updates and participate in the formulation of group or industry standards to avoid missing market windows due to standard gaps. - Build recycling systems, cooperate with downstream brands or recycling companies, and accumulate stable supply channels for recycled materials in advance.

Safety protective textiles are at a turning point from 'qualified' to 'user-friendly'. Whoever can first find the balance among comfort, greenization and intelligentization will occupy an advantageous position in the next round of competition.
