PTA spot benchmark price has climbed above 6,600 yuan per ton, with cumulative annual gains exceeding 40%. This level is pushing cost pressure along the polyester chain to a critical point. For downstream weaving and fabric companies, every fluctuation in feedstock means recalculating purchase windows, and the current price position is in a delicate balancing zone.
What the Price Data Reveals
As of September 9, the PTA benchmark stood at 6,606.50 yuan per ton, up 4.81% from the beginning of the month, with a daily gain of 2.52%. Over a longer timeframe, this price sits in the upper range of the past year—just shy of the annual maximum of 6,932.90 yuan per ton, and more than 51% above the annual minimum of 4,363.25 yuan. The median is 5,648.08 yuan, and the average is 5,604.70 yuan, placing the current price nearly 18% above the mean.
These figures illustrate that the PTA price increase is not a short-term spike but a sustained upward trend. From a textile procurement perspective, this means the cost support for polyester raw materials is systematically rising, not merely reflecting occasional market volatility.
Cost Transmission and Profit Redistribution
The high PTA price first impacts the profit margins of polyester plants. High PX costs, coupled with tight PTA supply, put polyester producers in a dilemma: they need to pass on costs downstream but fear weak demand absorption. Market performance shows that polyester filament price increases have been significantly smaller than PTA, suggesting that profits are concentrating upstream.
For weaving enterprises, pricing power for greige and finished fabrics is fragmented, and raw material cost increases are hard to fully pass through, squeezing margins further. Small and medium-sized weaving mills, lacking long-term fixed-price contracts, are more vulnerable to raw material swings.
Capacity Cycle and Price Expectations
PTA industry is in a lull between capacity expansions. Past overexpansion led to oversupply and depressed prices; currently, limited new capacity and maintenance shutdowns have tightened supply. Meanwhile, downstream polyester demand remains resilient, with high operating rates supported by export orders.
This supply-demand structure suggests PTA prices are prone to rise than fall. However, the annual maximum of 6,932.90 yuan per ton poses strong resistance; approaching that level could trigger profit-taking by traders, leading to a pullback. Additionally, crude oil price fluctuations transmit through PX to PTA, adding uncertainty.
