Within just two days, mainstream polyester filament quotes in the Changshu market moved up across the board, with the smallest gain reaching 100 yuan per tonne and some bright trilobal variants jumping 300 yuan. Yet trading volume did not expand in step. This price-first, volume-later pattern is the most telling signal in the polyester chain right now.

Quote Structure: Who Leads, Who Follows

Industry public data and customs-referenced samples show the adjustment covered a wide range. Among regular FDY items, key specifications such as 68D/24F, 100D/48F and 150D/96F rose by 200 yuan per tonne, while 75D/36F showed a split gain of 100 to 150 yuan depending on origin.

The real divergence appeared in bright trilobal series. Specifications including 50D/24F, 50D/36F, 75D/36F bright and 108D/48F bright rose by 200 to 300 yuan per tonne, clearly outpacing semi-dull standard items. This suggests downstream acceptance for higher-value, differentiated specifications is relatively stronger, or that capacity in these segments carries more pricing power when raw materials climb.

DTY followed suit, with 75D/36F, 150D/144F and 150D/96F gaining 200 yuan per tonne over two days, while some 200D/96F fixed-weight items held flat. Texturing-stage transmission is clearly not uniform, and supply-demand tightness is diverging by specification.

Cost Transmission: How Hard Is the Upstream Push?

The immediate trigger was a strong rally in polyester raw materials. PTA and MEG strengthening directly squeezed processing spreads for filament makers, making this a passive price hike rather than an active push.

For buyers, it matters to distinguish two types of increases: demand-pull, where orders are full and inventories draw down, giving prices real support; and cost-push, where end-user orders have not recovered and the rise is transmitted one-way from upstream. Changshu today looks closer to the latter, as quotes rose without a matching volume increase, indicating weaving mills remain cautious about restocking.

This also explains why differentiated items such as bright trilobal and fine-denier specifications rose more. Capacity in these segments is relatively concentrated, giving mills stronger pricing power under cost pressure, while commodity-grade products are more likely to get stuck in a rise-but-no-sale stalemate.

Industry Impact: Ripple Effects Across Shengze, Xiaoshan and Tongxiang

Changshu quotes are never isolated. Major origins including Rongsheng, Tongkun, Xinfengming, Hengyi and Tiansheng span Xiaoshan, Tongxiang, Shaoxing and the Jiangsu riverside belt, and their pricing moves quickly transmit to downstream weaving clusters in Shengze and Nantong.

For weaving mills, higher raw material costs mean greige fabric quotes face recalculation. If apparel and home textile orders fail to price up in tandem, mill margins will be squeezed further, and some smaller players may cut operating rates or draw down existing inventories.

For exporters, a sustained raw material rise will gradually feed into export quotes. But overseas buyers are highly price-sensitive at present and are more likely to wait and see, deferring replenishment until the trend becomes clearer.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Prioritize specifications: for bright trilobal and fine-denier items with larger gains, lock in early if there is near-term刚性 demand to avoid chasing higher prices - For standard semi-dull items, moderate waiting is reasonable, watching for any raw material pullback before bulk purchasing - Confirm quote validity with suppliers, as price volatility has shortened the shelf life of verbal quotes

For Mills - Recalculate processing spreads to judge whether current quotes cover raw material costs and avoid losing more as prices rise - Prioritize scheduling for differentiated specifications, which hold stronger pricing power in this rally - Manage raw material inventory pace and avoid one-time heavy stocking at high prices

For Exporters - Leave room for raw material volatility in export quotes, or include price adjustment clauses in contracts - Track polyester raw material trends closely, as a raw material peak often opens a better order-taking window - Communicate cost pressure early with long-term clients to avoid履约 disputes from later price increases

Overall, this Changshu polyester filament rally is clearly cost-driven, and its durability depends on whether raw materials stay firm and downstream orders follow. If the upstream loosens while end demand remains dormant, the risk of a price correction should not be ignored.
