The technical threshold for protective textiles is shifting from "can it block" to "can it be worn comfortably." China Customs data and industry public information show that within the export structure of industrial textiles, the unit price growth of special protective products has outpaced conventional fabrics for several consecutive years. This signals that overseas buyers are migrating their evaluation criteria from single safety certification toward composite indicators including thermal-wet comfort and full lifecycle carbon footprint.

Event Context

At the 19th China International Trade Fair for Technical Textiles and Nonwovens, a delegation of experts from Donghua University, the Shanghai Fire Research Institute of the Ministry of Emergency Management, the National Labor Protection Products Quality Inspection and Testing Center, and electric power research institutions conducted a focused tour of nine safety protection enterprises. Exhibits spanned flame-retardant combat suits, bullet and stab resistant gear, 1000kV live-working shielding suits, and nuclear-biological-chemical emergency clothing, covering high-risk scenarios in firefighting, military-police operations, power grids, and petrochemicals.

Notably, this was not a simple product review but a deep dive organized around three themes: material innovation, standards development, and cross-sector integration. The delegation spent extended time at multiple booths, with discussions centering on a long-standing industry dilemma: how to improve wearing experience while maintaining performance compliance.

Industry Impact

Tayho Advanced Materials showcased recycled aramid circular technology and a T2T textile closed-loop system. This points to a critical trend: sustainability in protective materials is moving from concept to mass production. The launch of its zero-carbon polyester series indicates that upstream chemical fiber enterprises are embedding carbon footprint management into the product definition stage. For downstream protective clothing manufacturers, this means the procurement logic for raw materials is being restructured—low-carbon attributes may become an entry threshold rather than a bonus point.

Zhongwei Chemical Fiber, as the first domestic enterprise to master nylon 66 airbag yarn production technology, has already supplied downstream automakers in volume. The industrial significance of this breakthrough lies in breaking the long-standing import dependence for automotive airbag yarn. The maturation of domestic supply chains will compress the raw material cost fluctuation range for downstream airbag fabric producers while providing technology spillover to related categories such as tire cord fabric.

Bangwei High-Tech's Nano-Com high-permeability electrospun nanofiber membrane composite material visually demonstrated the balance between protection and breathability through a testing device. For buyers, the value of such membrane materials lies in addressing the long-standing complaint of "stuffiness" in protective gear, potentially opening incremental markets in medical protection and outdoor operations where comfort requirements are higher.

Shaanxi Yuanfeng New Materials' arc-flash protective clothing, flame-retardant anti-static clothing, and welding clothing that meet new CNPC standards, along with Baoding Sanyuan Textile's 1000kV UHV live-working shielding suits, jointly point to one judgment: standards upgrades in segmented scenarios are forcing material enterprises to adjust R&D priorities. Whoever completes product certification under new standards first will gain a first-mover position in tenders from major clients in power and petrochemical sectors.

Jiangsu Kexu Textile's technical reserves in flame-retardant yarns, cut-resistant fabrics, and green recycled materials, along with Shanghai Yibeina's high-performance aluminum film composite thermal insulation material jointly developed with the Shanghai Fire Research Institute, further confirm the accelerating penetration of industry-academia-research collaboration in the protective field. Yihe's application of rare-earth functional materials in antibacterial textiles offers a differentiated path for functional expansion of protective clothing.

Professor Si Yang of Donghua University noted after the tour that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the three distinctive features of functionalization, greening, and intelligentization in the safety protection textile industry have become very clear. In functionalization, high-performance materials resistant to high temperatures and extreme environments continue to break through. In greening, bio-based materials and recycled waste textiles have made substantive progress. In intelligentization, protective equipment is moving from passive isolation toward active sensing and response.

The implication for factories is that simply expanding capacity can no longer create competitive advantage. Whether a company can integrate intelligent sensing and electronic integration with textile structural design will determine its technical score in the next round of tenders. For buyers, a supplier's cross-disciplinary integration capability in "materials plus electronics" may carry more evaluation value than single fabric indicators.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Incorporate thermal-wet comfort and carbon footprint data into supplier evaluation systems, rather than focusing solely on flame retardancy ratings and stab resistance - Monitor certification progress of domestic substitute materials such as nylon 66 airbag yarn and electrospun nanofiber membranes, and secure suppliers with mass production capability in advance - For high-standard scenarios such as power and petrochemicals, prioritize protective clothing products that have passed new standards certification such as CNPC standards

For Factories - Accelerate iteration toward lightweight and comfortable products on top of flame-retardant anti-static foundations, reducing the risk of end users removing protective gear due to stuffiness - Explore joint R&D mechanisms with universities and research institutes, particularly in the integration of smart wearables and protective fabrics - Prioritize process adaptation for recycled aramid and bio-based materials to build technical reserves for downstream brand clients' low-carbon procurement requirements
