The same specification of polyester staple fiber is being quoted with a spread of 280 yuan per tonne across different production sites in the Yangtze River Delta — a figure higher than the net profit per tonne of yarn for many spinning mills. Market quotes on September 11, 2026 show that 1.56dtex×38mm cotton-type premium melt-spun staple fiber was offered at 8,720–8,730 yuan/tonne by Zhonglei in Huzhou, 8,670 yuan/tonne by Xintuo in Xuzhou, 8,470 yuan/tonne by Huahong in Wuxi, and 8,750 yuan/tonne by Huaxicun in Wuxi. There is no unified anchor price, and procurement decisions are becoming increasingly difficult.

Divergence Is Not Accidental

Geographically, these four quotes cover three chemical fiber clusters: Huzhou in Zhejiang, Xuzhou in Jiangsu, and Wuxi in Jiangsu. Huahong at 8,470 yuan/tonne and Huaxicun at 8,750 yuan/tonne are both in Wuxi, yet the spread remains 280 yuan/tonne. This indicates that even within the same city, differences in cost structure, raw material integration, and order saturation have grown too large to be captured by a regional average.

For downstream spinners, this means the traditional logic of quoting by region is failing. Procurement officers used to compare prices by province; now they must drill down to specific plants, batches, and settlement terms. Melt-spun technology demands high integration with PTA and MEG, and plants with upstream integrated facilities have more room to maneuver on costs, naturally quoting lower.

Meanwhile, Henan Kaijie quoted fiber balls at 15,500 yuan/tonne, with all three diameter specifications — 50mm, 40mm, and 30mm — at the same price. Fiber balls are water treatment filter media, a different application track from textile staple fiber, but their presence in the same quote system reflects a shift in chemical fiber pricing from category-based to application-scenario-based.

Transmission Through the Chain

Staple fiber price divergence first affects the processing margin of pure polyester yarn and polyester-cotton blends. Using Huahong at 8,470 yuan/tonne as the raw material benchmark versus Huaxicun at 8,750 yuan/tonne, the raw material cost per tonne of yarn differs by about 280 yuan. With yarn selling prices difficult to adjust in tandem, procurement choices directly determine a mill's profit boundary.

For traders, the spread implies arbitrage opportunities but also risks. Cross-regional sourcing must account for logistics costs, settlement cycles, and quality consistency. 1.56dtex×38mm is a standard specification for cotton-type staple fiber and is theoretically interchangeable, but oil formulations and crimp levels vary slightly between plants, and batch switching can affect yarn breakage rates.

From a longer perspective, the fragmentation of staple fiber quotes is a typical feature of an overcapacity phase. When industry-wide operating rates are insufficient to support a unified price, companies can only compete for existing orders through differentiated quotes. The price differences among Huzhou, Xuzhou, and Wuxi essentially reflect their respective inventory pressures and customer structures.

Procurement Window and Risks

The current range of 8,470–8,750 yuan/tonne sits at a relatively neutral level for the year. However, caution is warranted: if PTA and MEG prices move unilaterally, staple fiber plants often adjust quotes asynchronously — low-cost plants may cut prices first to grab orders, while high-cost plants may delay following. This asymmetric adjustment further widens the spread.

For export-oriented spinning mills, exchange rates and shipping add another layer. RMB fluctuations partially offset the cost advantage from raw material spreads, while Southeast Asian buyers typically have longer inquiry cycles than domestic traders, leaving a narrower price-locking window.

For Procurement Teams - Refine inquiry granularity from regional averages to plant-plus-batch level, focusing on spread signals within the same city - Establish a price comparison mechanism with at least three qualified suppliers for 1.56dtex×38mm specifications to avoid single-source dependence - When the spread exceeds 200 yuan/tonne, assess whether logistics and quality risks of cross-regional procurement are manageable

For Mills - Closely track spot PTA and MEG trends; staple fiber quote adjustments typically lag by no more than a week - Clearly inform yarn customers of batch changes to reduce claims disputes from raw material switching - Use spread windows to optimize raw material inventory structure, but avoid overstocking during a downward price channel

For Exporters - Build a buffer for staple fiber price volatility in export quotes; quarterly rather than monthly price locking is recommended - Monitor shifts in Southeast Asian buyer preferences for cotton-type staple fiber specifications, as some markets are turning to differentiated fibers - Link exchange rate hedging with raw material procurement strategy to prevent a single variable from eroding margins
