Cotton yarn 32S has been sitting flat in the 23,900–24,000 yuan/ton range for days, while polyester yarn 32S quietly added 100 yuan/ton over the same period. That divergence carries a signal easily missed: cost pass-through efficiency is accelerating at different speeds across yarn categories.
Divergence: Who Rises, Who Holds
Hutong market quotes for September 13 show cotton yarn nearly flat across the board. OE7S from Anhui at 15,800 yuan/ton, Xinjiang at 15,900; 21S low-spec from Henan at 21,300, Hubei at 21,400; high-spec 32S from Xinjiang at 24,000, Henan at 23,900; combed J40S from Zhejiang at 26,900, Xinjiang at 27,000. From low count to high count, carded to combed, the cotton yarn price curve is a near-horizontal line.
Polyester-cotton blends show selective adjustments. T65/C35 21SK from Shandong at 15,200 yuan/ton, 32SK from Hebei at 15,500 and Shandong at 15,700, 45SK from Hebei at 16,800 and Shandong at 16,900. Unlike cotton's uniform flatness, the spread between blend specifications is being repriced, reflecting the gradual transmission of polyester staple fiber cost volatility into the blended yarn segment.
What truly breaks the calm is rayon and pure polyester yarn. Rayon 20S from Zhejiang moved from 17,100 to 17,200 yuan/ton, 30S from 18,300 to 18,400; pure polyester 16S from 10,600 to 10,700, 21S from 11,000 to 11,100, 32S from 12,100 to 12,200. The 100 yuan/ton gain is modest, but the directional consistency deserves attention.
The Tug Between Cost and Demand
Cotton yarn's uniform stability is not the result of strong demand. On the contrary, it reflects a standoff between upstream and downstream. Cotton costs provide a floor, but downstream weaving mills are cautious, traders lack restocking appetite, and spinners operating on thin margins dare neither raise prices nor cut them. This balance is fragile. Once cotton futures or spot prices break in either direction, the sideways pattern will collapse quickly.
Pure polyester yarn's rise follows a more direct logic. Polyester staple fiber, its upstream raw material, is pulled by crude oil and PTA trends. Recent cost increases are gradually transmitting to the yarn end. Since processing margins for pure polyester yarn are inherently limited, every uptick in raw material strengthens spinners' urge to follow. A 100 yuan/ton gain looks mild, but against a low base, the percentage increase approaches 1%.
Rayon's upward tail is most intriguing. Viscose staple fiber supply faces expectations of阶段性 tightening, while downstream demand for vortex-spun and ring-spun rayon yarn remains stable. Mid-to-low count rayon from Zhejiang mills is moving relatively smoothly. The 100 yuan/ton gains on 20S and 30S suggest spinners are testing price increases, and market acceptance will determine how far this rally goes.
Blended yarn sits between the two extremes. Within the T65/C35 series, high-count 45SK quotes are notably higher than low-count 21SK. The widening specification spread means downstream willingness to pay for higher-quality blends is relatively stronger, while low-count products face fiercer homogenized competition.
Transmission Through the Supply Chain
For downstream weavers and garment makers, yarn price divergence means procurement strategies need greater precision. Applying a uniform price expectation across all categories risks losses on pure polyester and rayon. For mills making blended fabrics, the widening spread within polyester-cotton specifications will directly affect the accuracy of greige cost calculations.
For exporters, structural changes at the raw material end will lag into export quotes. Current cotton yarn stability supports stable pricing for cotton products, but if polyester raw materials continue rising, forward orders face dual risks from exchange rates and materials that require early hedging. Rayon's increase is small, but for export orders using rayon as a primary material, profit margins could be further squeezed.
From a regional perspective, Hutong as a key yarn distribution hub sends price signals that serve as a bellwether for Jiangsu-Zhejiang weaving clusters. The 100–200 yuan/ton spread between Xinjiang and mainland cotton yarn remains within the normal range, indicating no abnormal disruption in logistics or capacity layout. But the synchronized uptick in pure polyester and rayon may foreshadow a阶段性 strengthening of chemical fiber raw materials.
