The polyester filament yarn market is undergoing a moderate but broad-based price recovery. Taking Changshu as a window, on 13 September, listed prices for mainstream FDY and DTY products rose compared with 10 September, with increases mostly between 50 and 200 yuan per tonne. The adjustment was not isolated: major suppliers including Rongsheng, Tongkun, Xinfengming, Hengyi and Tiansheng all moved prices, indicating an industry-wide consensus on cost pressure.

Cost push is the main driver, but demand has not followed

On the raw material side, PTA and ethylene glycol prices have remained firm recently, directly raising polyester filament production costs. Facing squeezed margins, mills are passing pressure downstream through higher quotes—a classic cost-push move. However, in contrast to the broad price increase, sales volumes have not expanded notably. Downstream weaving mills remain cautious, buying mainly for immediate needs rather than speculative stocking. This means the sustainability of the rally depends heavily on whether raw material prices stay strong, rather than on a genuine recovery in end-user demand.

By product category, fine-denier FDY has seen relatively larger increases. Rongsheng Petrochemical's 68D/24F rose 150 yuan to 10,400 yuan/tonne, while Tongkun's same specification rose 100 yuan to 10,300 yuan/tonne. In the bright series, Jiabao Chemical Fiber's 108D/48F increased 150 yuan to 9,950 yuan/tonne. Fine-denier and bright products, often used in silk-like fabrics, linings and high-end home textiles, are more sensitive to raw material cost changes. In DTY, texturing mills followed suit: Taicang texturing 75D/36F reached 11,300 yuan/tonne, and Xiaoshan Kaishi 150D/48F reached 10,700 yuan/tonne, mostly up around 100 yuan.

Regional spreads narrow, arbitrage window closes

Across production origins, price gaps have narrowed further after this round of adjustments. For FDY 150D/96F, Tongxiang Tongkun quoted 9,700 yuan/tonne, Xiaoshan Hengyi 9,750 yuan/tonne, and Jiabao New Fiber 9,750 yuan/tonne—a spread of only 50 yuan/tonne. After deducting logistics costs, cross-regional arbitrage is barely viable. This suggests that improved information transparency and logistics efficiency are eroding traditional regional price advantages. For buyers, relying solely on cross-region price comparison is becoming less effective; attention should shift to non-price terms such as settlement methods, credit periods and minimum order quantities.

Analysing the transmission path, the impact on downstream players is diverging. Weavers producing low-value-added items like common linings and pocket fabrics have weaker cost pass-through ability, and margins may be further compressed. Mills making differentiated fabrics or functional home textiles, with stronger pricing power, can better absorb raw material volatility. Exporters face a more complex situation: if orders are priced at fixed rates and raw materials continue to rise, margins will be eroded; if contracts allow price adjustments, negotiations with overseas buyers will test long-term relationships and bargaining power.

Outlook: firm short term, demand test in the medium term

In the near term, polyester filament prices are likely to remain firm, with raw material cost support intact and mills showing a clear willingness to hold prices. The medium-term trend depends on two key variables: whether downstream orders during the traditional peak season genuinely pick up, and whether polyester plants cut production or schedule maintenance, altering the supply-demand balance. If sales remain sluggish while prices rise on paper, inventory pressure could surface after the National Day holiday, increasing the risk of a price correction.

For market participants, the core strategy at this stage should be "control inventory, lock margins, watch raw materials." Large-scale stockpiling is not advisable before demand is verified, but short-term price locks with suppliers for essential items can hedge against further raw material increases.

For buyers - Lock prices in batches for essential items to avoid chasing highs and reduce timing risk - Focus on credit terms and settlement methods as non-price negotiation value rises amid narrowing spreads - Track PTA futures and polyester operating rates as leading indicators for purchasing rhythm

For mills - Prioritise fine-denier and bright products with stronger pricing power to optimise profit structure - Control raw material inventory days and avoid overstocking at high price levels - Prepare contingency plans for production cuts or shifts if pre-holiday orders fall short
