A spread of just 460 yuan separated the highest and lowest quotes for a single specification of polyester DTY from five major Zhejiang suppliers in mid-September 2026. When the brand-to-brand price gap for a highly standardized product compresses to under 5%, the signal matters far more than the numbers themselves.

Breaking Down the Quote Structure

According to China Customs data and publicly available industry figures, the specification in question is 150D/48F melt-spun semi-dull low-elasticity yarn, AA-grade, white. This is one of the highest-volume conventional items in weaving, widely used in apparel fabrics, home textile linings and industrial cloth.

The five suppliers quoted as follows:
- Zhejiang Juxing Chemical Fiber: 10,100 yuan/tonne
- Zhejiang Senkai New Materials: 10,270 yuan/tonne
- Hangzhou Kaishi Chemical Fiber: 10,500 yuan/tonne
- Rongsheng Petrochemical: 10,550 yuan/tonne
- Tongkun Group: 10,560 yuan/tonne

Notably, the lowest quote comes from a Shaoxing-based supplier, while the highest quotes originate from Tongxiang and Hangzhou. How much of the 460-yuan gap reflects logistics costs versus brand premium is the core question buyers need to unpack.

Pricing Logic Under Homogenization

Melt-spinning DTY production is now a mature process. Domestic equipment localization rates have risen steadily, and technical barriers for new entrants have dropped significantly. When capacity is released in concentrated waves, price competition is almost inevitable.

From an industrial-belt perspective, Shaoxing is one of China's largest chemical fiber fabric production bases. Strong local absorption capacity means suppliers there, under inventory turnover pressure, are more inclined to trade price for volume. Hangzhou and Tongxiang-based firms, backed by more complete supply chain infrastructure and stronger brand recognition, have sustained a premium of 300 to 400 yuan.

Whether this premium is sustainable depends on the rigidity of downstream demand. Current textile orders exhibit small-batch, multi-frequency characteristics. Weavers prioritize fabric consistency over brand names. Once downstream customers complete supplier qualification switching, brand stickiness declines rapidly.

For upstream factories, the 460-yuan band means two things: first, room to further compress costs through scale is limited; second, differentiated products — cationic dyeable, flame-retardant or high-shrinkage specifications — represent the viable path out of price wars.

Practical Impact on Procurement and Export

From a buyer's perspective, in a narrow-spread environment, the gains from pure price comparison are diminishing. The difference between 10,100 and 10,560 yuan, after adjusting for logistics, payment terms and minimum order quantities, may result in a landed cost gap far smaller than the headline number.

Exporters face more complex variables. Exchange rate fluctuations, ocean freight rates and destination-country tariff policies often influence final quotes more than the 460-yuan raw material spread. This means export procurement decisions should treat raw material cost as a baseline variable, not a decisive one.

Another easily overlooked dimension is settlement method. Some suppliers embed differences between cash-on-delivery and acceptance-bill terms into their quotes, which can translate to an annualized funding cost of 200 to 300 yuan per tonne. Buyers who focus only on unit price risk losing on total cost.

Trend Assessment

In the short term, the quote band for conventional polyester DTY specifications will continue to fluctuate within a narrow range. Upstream PTA and MEG price movements are the primary variables, but against a backdrop of overcapacity, cost pass-through efficiency is declining.

In the medium term, industry consolidation will accelerate. Small and mid-sized texturing mills lacking differentiation capabilities face the risk of being squeezed out, while leading enterprises will further consolidate cost advantages through vertical integration. For downstream users, the number of suppliers may decrease, but service quality and supply stability are likely to improve.

For Buyers - Incorporate logistics radius into supplier evaluation; the hidden cost advantage of local Shaoxing procurement may exceed the headline spread - Request comprehensive quotes that include payment terms, not just unit prices - Establish at least two qualified suppliers for conventional specifications to reduce single-source risk

For Exporters - Treat raw material spread as a secondary variable in pricing models, focusing instead on hedging exchange rate and ocean freight exposure - Specify quality dispute resolution clauses in contracts; in a narrow-spread environment, some suppliers may control costs by compromising non-critical indicators - Monitor export opportunities for differentiated specifications, as profit margins on conventional DTY exports continue to compress
