The price coordinates of nylon POY have shifted significantly over the past year. At 15,525 yuan/ton, the current benchmark sits 4,225 yuan above the annual low of 11,300 yuan and only 1,425 yuan below the annual peak of 16,950 yuan. This position means that after spending most of the past twelve months near the 13,195 yuan average, nylon POY now occupies the upper-middle band, with limited upside and downside support hinging on cost rigidity.

Drivers Behind the Price Jump

From 14,625 yuan/ton at the start of the month to the current 15,525 yuan/ton, a 6.15% monthly gain represents a notable move among chemical fiber categories. Cost transmission is the main thread. Caprolactam, the core feedstock for nylon POY, directly determines the break-even line for chip and spinning operations. When caprolactam spot supply tightens, the spread between contract and spot prices widens, forcing spinners to absorb higher feedstock costs and pass them through to POY quotes.

Demand provides the secondary push. September marks the start of the traditional textile peak season, with warp-knitting, weft-knitting and lace mills holding genuine restocking needs. Some factories with low raw material inventories concentrated purchases, amplifying short-term volume and reinforcing the upward price momentum. The critical distinction, however, is whether this restocking is order-driven or speculative—the former is sustainable, while the latter typically fades within two weeks.

Another signal worth noting from the annual data is that the daily gain has flattened to zero. The current price is unchanged from the previous trading day, suggesting the rapid rally phase may be pausing as the market enters a wait-and-see period. Both buyers and sellers are assessing whether the current level has already priced in peak-season expectations.

Supply Chain Transmission and Profit Redistribution

The impact of rising nylon POY prices is asymmetric across the supply chain. For integrated producers with in-house caprolactam or chip capacity, feedstock self-sufficiency hedges cost pressure, and POY price increases translate more directly into margin expansion. For independent spinners that purchase chips externally, the ability to pass through the full increase depends on downstream acceptance.

Downstream weaving capacity is diverging. Factories producing high-elasticity fabrics, swimwear materials and sports innerwear enjoy better tolerance for raw material increases due to higher value-added end orders. But small and medium mills making standard warp-knitted mesh or ordinary lace operate on thin processing margins, and every 500 yuan/ton rise in POY noticeably strains their cash flow. This means that if prices continue to climb, supply chain profits will concentrate further upstream, and midstream weaving utilization rates could fall rather than rise.

Regionally, Fujian Changle, Zhejiang Xiaoshan and Guangdong Chaoshan are the primary consumption hubs for nylon POY. Changle's warp-knitting industry, Xiaoshan's chemical fiber weaving base and Chaoshan's lace and innerwear cluster each respond differently to feedstock volatility. Changle mills, with higher scale and bargaining power, are relatively better positioned; small Chaoshan lace factories are more likely to cut production passively during a price upcycle.

Price Outlook and Risk Boundaries

At 15,525 yuan/ton, the current price has roughly 9% of headroom before reaching the annual high of 16,950 yuan. Further gains require two conditions simultaneously: sustained caprolactam supply tightness and stable downstream orders from late September through mid-October. If either condition weakens, prices could retreat into the 14,500-15,000 yuan range.

The key risk is that if this rally is primarily driven by speculative restocking, then any disappointment in end-market apparel retail data would prompt weaving mills to slash raw material purchases, causing POY prices to quickly give back gains. The 4,225 yuan gap above the annual low serves as a reminder that downside space cannot be ignored. For buyers, the cost-effectiveness of chasing the rally is diminishing; for sellers, balancing profit realization against shipment volumes is becoming harder.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - With prices in the upper-middle band of the year, shift from concentrated restocking to small-batch, multi-frequency purchasing to reduce single-entry risk. - Monitor the spread between caprolactam spot and contract prices; a narrowing spread signals weakening cost support and a potential pullback window. - For long-term orders, consider locking in forward prices with suppliers, but keep the proportion below 40% of quarterly volume.

For Mills - Independent spinners should prioritize cash flow and avoid excessive chip inventory accumulation at elevated feedstock prices. - Weaving enterprises need to recalculate the ratio of processing fees to raw material costs; if processing fees cannot be raised in tandem, proactively adjust product mix toward higher value-added categories. - Watch end-order arrivals in late September; if new orders fall short, reducing utilization rates early is more controllable than passive shutdowns.
