The acrylonitrile spot market is undergoing a round of price support driven by proactive supply contraction. On September 15, Fushun Petrochemical raised its acrylonitrile list price by RMB 300 per tonne to RMB 11,100 per tonne, while its 92,000 t/y plant remains shut down. The simultaneous move on list price and plant status suggests the producer is not passively following the market but deliberately testing downstream acceptance by controlling volume. For the textile chain, this means raw material costs for acrylic fiber and ABS derivatives are likely to stay firm in the near term.
Supply Side: The Combined Effect of Shutdown and Firm Pricing
Fushun Petrochemical's 92,000 t/y acrylonitrile plant is mid-sized by industry standards, so a single-plant shutdown has limited direct impact on national supply. However, when a list price hike coincides with maintenance, it changes the stockpiling rhythm of traders and downstream factories. Public industry data shows China's acrylonitrile capacity has expanded steadily in recent years, and the phase of overcapacity has not been fundamentally reversed. Therefore, a single-point shutdown is more of a sentiment boost than a real shortage.
It is worth noting that a gap typically exists between list prices and actual transaction prices. Producers raise list prices to set a firmer tone for subsequent settlement prices while leaving room for traders to operate. For buyers, a RMB 300 list price increase does not mean spot prices will immediately follow by the same amount, but the bargaining center is indeed shifting upward.
Demand Side: Questionable Absorption by Acrylic Fiber and ABS
The two major downstream outlets for acrylonitrile are acrylic fiber and ABS resin. Acrylic fiber is mainly used in blankets, wool-like fabrics and some outdoor textiles, with end consumption closely tied to the prosperity of home textiles and apparel exports. Currently, export order recovery is slow, and acrylic fiber plants are resistant to high-priced raw materials, potentially offsetting cost pressure by reducing operating rates.
For ABS, demand from home appliances and autos remains resilient, but the sector itself faces pressure from new capacity releases, and acrylonitrile procurement is mostly based on essential restocking. This means that after the list price hike, actual transaction volume may be limited, and price transmission will encounter resistance downstream. If downstream operating rates decline in tandem, the upside for acrylonitrile prices will be compressed.
Regional and Alternative Supply: East China Port Inventory Is the Key Variable
Fushun Petrochemical is located in Northeast China, and its cargo mainly supplies Northeast and North China markets. East China, as the core region for acrylonitrile consumption and trade, has port inventory and import arrival rhythms that better reflect true supply and demand. If East China port inventory is at a mid-to-high level, the price support from a Northeast producer will have a diluted effect on the national market.
For textile enterprises, two alternative paths deserve attention: whether other domestic producers follow the price increase, and whether the import arbitrage window opens. If the domestic-foreign price spread widens, imported cargo may supplement supply and smooth price fluctuations. Buyers should treat Fushun Petrochemical's list price adjustment as a signal rather than an isolated event.
