On the same day, for the same premium grade, PTA quoted across four different delivery locations showed a spread of up to 700 yuan per ton — a range that exceeds the fluctuation band of per-ton processing margins at many polyester plants. Spot quotations on September 24, 2026 showed Zibo in Shandong at 7,500 yuan/ton, Changzhou in Jiangsu at 7,150 yuan/ton, Wuxi in Jiangsu at 7,200 yuan/ton, and Wuhan in Hubei at just 6,800 yuan/ton. This is not merely price volatility; it signals a subtle shift in the regional pricing mechanism of polyester raw materials.

Structural Features of the Price Divergence

From the supplier perspective, Yisheng Dahua cargoes were quoted in Zibo, Wuxi and Wuhan, yet the spread reached 700 yuan/ton. Such a wide gap for the same producer's product across different delivery points indicates that logistics costs and regional supply-demand mismatches are becoming key variables in procurement decisions. Hengli Petrochemical's quotation in Changzhou sat in the middle at 7,150 yuan/ton, above the low-priced Wuhan cargo but below the Zibo range.

Geographically, East China main port quotations clustered between 7,150 and 7,200 yuan/ton, while inland Wuhan was notably lower. This "high east, low west" pattern does not fully align with traditional logistics cost markup logic — typically, inland areas should see higher delivered prices due to greater transport costs. The low Wuhan quotation may reflect insufficient local polyester operating rates, ample spot liquidity, or suppliers using price advantages to compete for inland market share.

Notably, the Zibo quotation of 7,500 yuan/ton deviates significantly from the mainstream East China range of 7,150 to 7,200 yuan/ton. As a major PTA consumption province with concentrated local polyester capacity, Shandong's higher Zibo quotation may indicate short-term spot tightness in the region, or a supplier pricing strategy more oriented toward margin than volume.

Transmission Impact on the Polyester Chain

PTA is the core raw material for polyester production, and its price movements directly determine the cost floor for polyester chips, filament yarn and staple fiber. The current 700 yuan/ton regional spread means polyester plants in different locations may face significantly different raw material costs even when producing the same specification. Taking polyester filament yarn as an example, if a ton of yarn consumes about 0.86 tons of PTA, the 700 yuan spread translates to roughly 600 yuan/ton in raw material cost difference — enough to alter a plant's competitiveness in a given market.

For buyers, this divergence creates arbitrage opportunities but also management challenges. If a Changzhou plant can procure at 7,150 yuan/ton while a Wuhan peer pays only 6,800 yuan/ton, the incentive for Wuhan cargo to flow eastward increases. However, whether physical flows actually materialize depends on transport cycles, capital occupation and suppliers' cross-regional sales policies. Some suppliers may impose restrictions on cross-regional reselling, meaning the spread may not be fully arbitraged away.

From a broader perspective, a widening PTA regional spread is often a leading indicator of diverging polyester sector health. When regional supply and demand are relatively balanced, the spread typically narrows to a reasonable logistics range of 200 to 300 yuan/ton. The current 700 yuan level suggests some regions may be experiencing inventory buildup or weakening demand, while others remain in tight balance.

Response Logic for Market Participants

For polyester plants, watching a single region's quotation is no longer sufficient. Procurement teams need to establish cross-regional price monitoring mechanisms, incorporating logistics costs, delivery cycles and supplier credit terms into a comprehensive comparison model. Especially for plants with monthly procurement volumes in the thousands of tons, regional spreads of tens to hundreds of yuan accumulate into meaningful margin adjustment space.

For traders, wider regional spreads mean increased cross-regional circulation opportunities, but operational difficulty also rises. Key assessments include: whether spot liquidity in the target region is sufficient, whether suppliers permit cross-regional sales, and whether downstream customers' delivery time requirements allow for longer logistics cycles.

For upstream PTA producers, regional quotation divergence may prompt a reassessment of pricing strategies. If low-priced Wuhan cargo continues to pressure the East China market, it will become harder for East China suppliers to hold prices. Conversely, if Zibo's high price is sustained, it suggests Shandong's demand resilience is stronger than expected, and other suppliers may follow with regional pricing coefficient adjustments.

For Buyers - Establish a cross-regional PTA quotation tracking table, updating premium-grade prices in key delivery locations such as Zibo, Changzhou, Wuxi and Wuhan weekly, and calculating actual delivered price spreads after deducting logistics costs - For plants with monthly volumes exceeding 500 tons, consider expanding procurement radius from local to regional markets, but confirm suppliers' cross-regional sales policies and minimum order quantities in advance - When regional spreads exceed 400 yuan/ton, evaluate the feasibility of increasing safety stock to lock in lower-priced regional cargoes

For Exporters - Monitor the transmission effect of PTA regional spreads on export quotations for polyester chips and staple fiber, as cost differences by origin may affect export competitiveness - When quoting externally, clarify the regional benchmark for raw material cost accounting to avoid margin erosion from procurement location differences - If target markets are highly price-sensitive, prioritize sourcing raw materials from lower-priced regions to maintain export quotation advantages, but balance logistics timeliness with customer delivery requirements
