When only 8,005.6110 tonnes of state cotton reserves were offered on September 24 and the entire volume was sold, the signal went beyond simple "strong demand." The sell-through rate held at 100%, with an average transaction price of 16,662.82 yuan per tonne, up just 13.85 yuan from the previous day, equivalent to 17,448.82 yuan per tonne for grade 3128B. The narrowing daily gain suggests that chasing higher prices is being tempered by price itself, yet zero unsold lots confirms that刚性 downstream demand for raw materials has not retreated. This combination of full volume and stable prices deserves closer scrutiny from textile enterprises than a simple price rally would.

Three Key Readings from the Transaction Structure

Start with the total volume. As of September 24, cumulative reserve cotton offered for sale reached 401,691.7451 tonnes, with 398,584.7791 tonnes actually sold, yielding a cumulative sell-through rate of 99.23%. Out of more than 400,000 tonnes offered, only about 3,100 tonnes went unsold — a high level in recent reserve cotton rotation auctions. This means textile enterprises have treated reserve cotton as a primary procurement channel, not a supplementary one.

Next, the price spread. The cumulative average transaction price was 17,186.00 yuan per tonne, equivalent to 17,845.04 yuan per tonne for grade 3128B. Imported cotton averaged 17,231.17 yuan per tonne, or 17,896.80 yuan per tonne on a 3128B basis, while Xinjiang cotton averaged 16,997.17 yuan per tonne, or 17,628.62 yuan per tonne on the same basis. The spread between the two on a 3128B basis is roughly 268 yuan per tonne. The daily average premium for imported cotton was 855.82 yuan per tonne, well below the cumulative average premium of 1,147.35 yuan per tonne. The decline in premiums indicates that bidding intensity is easing.

Third, the extremes. The cumulative highest transaction price was 19,370 yuan per tonne, while the lowest was 16,010 yuan per tonne — a range exceeding 3,300 yuan per tonne. On a single-day basis, the high was 17,420 yuan per tonne and the low was 16,420 yuan per tonne, a range of 1,000 yuan per tonne. The existence of such price dispersion reflects how the market is pricing quality differences across batches and origins. For buyers, a one-size-fits-all inquiry approach is no longer sufficient.

What Industrial Clusters Are Digesting

For major textile clusters in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, and Henan, the sustained high sell-through rate of reserve cotton essentially confirms one thing: operating rates in the yarn spinning segment have not experienced a cliff-edge decline. If downstream orders had severely contracted, reserve cotton could not have maintained near-full sell-through for consecutive sessions. However, the narrowing gain in average prices also shows that enterprises are unwilling to build large speculative inventories at current levels.

The spread between imported and Xinjiang cotton narrowing to less than 300 yuan per tonne is an easily overlooked but critical detail. When the spread is wide enough, enterprises tend to favor the more cost-effective option. As the spread narrows, procurement decisions shift more toward blending stability, delivery cycles, and capital occupation costs. This places higher demands on traders' pricing strategies — the room for pure price competition is compressing.

From the cumulative data, a 99.23% sell-through rate combined with an average price of 17,186 yuan per tonne forms a "high volume, mid-price" combination. It is neither panic buying nor demand collapse. A more reasonable interpretation is that textile enterprises are using reserve cotton to lock in base volumes while leaving incremental procurement to the spot market and import quotas, hedging against price volatility.

Transmission Paths for Procurement and Export

The reserve cotton transaction price, at nearly 17,800 yuan per tonne on a 3128B basis, will directly become an anchor for spot market quotes. When the reserve average exceeds spot prices, spot prices find support. When the reserve average falls below spot, spot traders face downward pressure. The current gap of about 400 yuan per tonne between the cumulative 3128B equivalent of 17,845.04 yuan and the daily 3128B equivalent of 17,448.82 yuan indicates that the recent transaction price center has shifted lower.

For textile enterprises handling export orders, a lower raw material cost center is positive, but only if order prices are not compressed in tandem. If overseas buyers demand price cuts citing falling cotton prices while the enterprise's raw material inventory costs remain at previous highs, profits will be squeezed from both ends. Therefore, the key at this stage is not predicting cotton price direction but managing the time gap between inventory costs and order quotes.

For Buyers - Monitor the gap between the daily 3128B equivalent price and the cumulative 3128B equivalent price; a widening gap signals a downward shift in the price center, allowing for a slower spot procurement pace - When the spread between imported and Xinjiang cotton narrows below 300 yuan per tonne, prioritize blending stability and delivery cycles over pure price comparison - When the daily average premium consistently falls below the cumulative average, bidding intensity is declining; consider participating during sessions with larger offered volumes

For Exporters - During a period of declining raw material costs, specify a raw material price adjustment mechanism in quotes to prevent unilateral price cut demands from overseas clients - Watch whether the reserve cotton sell-through rate falls below 95%; a sustained drop may signal weakening downstream orders, requiring earlier adjustments to order-taking strategies - For orders with longer lead times, use the reserve cotton average transaction price as a cost reference benchmark to lock in raw material-side profit margins
