On the same day, for the same grade and the same product, PTA quotes across four locations spanned 700 yuan per ton — a range wider than the per-ton processing profit of many polyester plants. On September 24, 2026, premium-grade PTA was quoted at 7,500 yuan per ton in Zibo, 7,150 in Changzhou, 7,200 in Wuxi and as low as 6,800 in Wuhan. These prices are not randomly scattered; they trace a cost curve declining from Shandong to Central China, from the coast to the interior.

Structural Forces Behind the Regional Spread

The 7,500 yuan per ton quote in Zibo reflects Yisheng Dahua cargo distributed through local traders. Shandong is itself a major refining and chemical province, but PTA pricing power is not entirely determined by local supply. The higher Zibo price mainly reflects rigid demand from surrounding polyester capacity for specific brand cargo, plus traders' channel premium within the region.

The 50 yuan per ton gap between Changzhou and Wuxi is modest, but their respective gaps with Zibo reach 350 and 300 yuan per ton. Jiangsu, home to China's densest polyester capacity, sees intense competition among PTA suppliers, compressing trader markups. Hengli Petrochemical cargo was quoted at 7,150 yuan per ton in Changzhou, while Yisheng Dahua was quoted at 7,200 in Wuxi. The mere 50 yuan spread between two mainstream brands within the same province suggests a relatively transparent price discovery mechanism in East China.

The 6,800 yuan per ton quote in Wuhan deserves separate scrutiny. Hubei is not a major PTA producing region; there are no large PTA plants locally, and cargo must be brought in from East China or other Central China nodes. Logically, logistics costs should push prices higher, yet the actual quote is the lowest. This implies local traders may be in a destocking phase, or downstream polyester operating rates are insufficient, leaving buying interest weak and holders willing to concede margins to move cargo.

Transmission Logic to Polyester and Export Channels

PTA sits at the starting point of the polyester chain, and its price movements directly determine the production costs of polyester filament, staple fiber and bottle chips. A 700 yuan per ton regional spread means that producing one ton of polyester filament costs 700 yuan less in Wuhan than in Zibo. If processing fees and freight differences do not offset this gap, polyester plants around Zibo will be at a clear disadvantage in export quotations.

In reality, transmission is not linear. Polyester plants typically sign monthly or quarterly contracts with PTA suppliers, so spot quote fluctuations mainly affect the portion of procurement beyond contracted volumes. For large polyester enterprises relying primarily on contract cargo, the impact of regional spreads is smoothed out; for small and medium plants dependent on spot purchases, the spread directly hits cash flow and quotation competitiveness.

What export buyers need to watch is that widening PTA regional spreads tend to transmit down the chain, but transmission efficiency depends on bargaining power at each stage. When the PTA spread persistently exceeds 300 yuan per ton, polyester plant export quotations will diverge regionally, and FOB prices for the same specification of polyester fabric may open gaps across different ports.

Differentiated Responses Across Industrial Belts

Polyester capacity around Zibo in Shandong is mainly chips and staple fiber. Higher local PTA quotes will push plants to increase sourcing from Jiangsu or Central China. But sourcing from afar takes time, and capital occupation and losses during transport partially offset the spread gains.

Polyester plants in Changzhou and Wuxi, Jiangsu, are relatively comfortable. Local PTA supply is ample and competition among brands is fierce, allowing plants to suppress procurement costs by switching suppliers. This flexibility matters particularly during PTA price uptrends.

Polyester capacity in Wuhan and surrounding Hubei areas is smaller, but the 6,800 yuan per ton low price may attract some downstream users in central regions to increase purchases. If this low price persists, Wuhan could become a PTA price depression in Central China, further influencing the sourcing radius of polyester plants in Henan and Hunan.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Establish a cross-regional PTA price monitoring mechanism; do not focus only on local quotes — track the spread trend between Zibo and Wuhan - Introduce regional spread clauses in contract negotiations, allowing adjustments to contract premiums or discounts when spot spreads exceed a threshold - For small and medium batch procurement, prioritize assessing the total cost of sourcing from low-price regions, including freight, capital occupation and delivery lead times

For Exporters - Specify the raw material cost accounting basis in FOB quotations to avoid distortion caused by PTA regional spreads - Monitor regional operating rate changes at polyester plants; rising operating rates in low-price regions may signal an imminent PTA price correction - For long-term orders, consider locking raw material costs or adopting floating price clauses to hedge against regional spread volatility
