A 92% willingness to pay more for natural fibres is not a survey footnote — it is a sourcing signal. The Ipsos study commissioned by Australian Wool Innovation in September 2026, covering 300 Chinese adults aged 18 to 65, found that 83% of respondents would choose Merino wool over polyester in similar styles, while 94% consider independent verification of fibre content and quality "very important." These numbers point to a structural shift in how autumn/winter fabrics are specified, priced and sourced.

The Consumer Shift Behind the Numbers

Seventy-seven percent of respondents said fibre composition has become more important to their purchase decisions over the past two to three years. That migration — from style-and-price comparison to composition-and-certification checking — is moving faster than most factories have adjusted their product narratives.

For mills, the competitive focus for autumn/winter orders used to sit on weight, hand feel and delivery. Now brands are asking for traceable fibre origin documentation. Certification has shifted from a bonus to a baseline requirement.

Why wool first? Merino's fineness, skin-friendly properties and natural elasticity remain hard to replicate in autumn/winter categories, while polyester's price advantage is being diluted by consumer demand for verified authenticity. When 92% of buyers accept a natural-fibre premium, pricing power moves from the cost side to the certification side.

An Eight-Year Alliance Between Certification and Channel

WOOLMARK and Tmall Super Category Day launched their partnership in 2019 and entered its eighth edition in 2026, running from 22 to 24 September under the theme "Return to Real." The campaign named Chinese supermodel He Sui as brand ambassador, with a film linking Merino wool to everyday comfort across generations.

The strategy's strength lies not in a single promotion but in eight years of accumulated consumer awareness. WOOLMARK, as the global wool textile certification body, controls the Woolmark logo. Tmall Super Category Day provides traffic and conversion. Brands deliver the products. Each party supplies what the others lack, forming a closed loop.

For upstream wool mills, this reshapes order books. Factories with WOOLMARK certification gain easier access to brand supplier shortlists on Tmall, while uncertified capacity is pushed toward lower-margin competition. Certification premiums are transmitting from retail back to the spinning floor, though the speed depends on brand procurement strategies.

Industrial Belt Response and Transmission

The wool textile clusters in Jiangsu and Zhejiang are most sensitive to certification demand. These enterprises have long served domestic and international brands as OEM suppliers, with quality management foundations but often lacking international certification. The WOOLMARK-Tmall collaboration effectively offers a path from contract manufacturing to certified supplier status.

But the transition is not free. Certification involves comprehensive compliance across raw material procurement, production processes and testing. For small and medium mills, the one-time investment can consume the profit of several orders. For buyers, this means certified wool supply elasticity is limited in the short term, with little room for price declines.

From an export perspective, Chinese consumer preference for natural fibres is converging with sustainable consumption trends in Europe and North America. Export-oriented wool mills holding both WOOLMARK certification and domestic e-commerce channel resources can hedge between domestic and export markets — shifting to domestic sales when export orders soften, and using certification to defend margins when domestic competition intensifies.

For Buyers - Confirm whether suppliers hold WOOLMARK certification during autumn/winter fabric inquiries, as it directly affects end-brand acceptance - Include fibre composition verification in contract terms to avoid returns or claims from mislabeling - Monitor the September-October certified wool supply window and lock in capacity early to avoid peak-season premiums

For Exporters - Use WOOLMARK certification as a quality label on cross-border platforms to improve search ranking and conversion in European and North American markets - Incorporate domestic e-commerce promotion dates into production planning to balance export and domestic capacity allocation - Amortise certification investment over a three-year horizon to avoid abandoning the certification path due to short-term profit fluctuations
