When more than 90% of Chinese consumers express willingness to pay a premium for natural fibers, the pricing logic of the wool supply chain is being rewritten. This shift in consumer sentiment is not an isolated phenomenon—it directly affects the inventory structure and profit margins of upstream farms, midstream wool textile enterprises, and downstream apparel brands.
A Structural Shift in Consumer Perception
Industry survey data shows that 77% of Chinese respondents have paid more attention to fiber composition over the past two to three years. Among garments with similar styles, 83% would choose Merino wool over polyester. More notably, 92% are willing to pay more for natural fibers, and 94% consider independent certification of fiber content and quality very important.
These figures reveal a key trend: consumers are shifting their judgment of apparel value from appearance-driven to composition-driven. For buyers, this means the weight of natural fibers in fabric sourcing lists needs to be increased. For factories, blending ratios and fiber content labeling compliance will become hard terms in order negotiations.
The survey covered Chinese adults aged 18 to 65, with a sample size of 300, conducted on September 7-8, 2026. Although the sample size is limited, the consumer psychology it reflects aligns with the growth trend of natural fiber categories on e-commerce platforms such as Tmall in recent years.
Eight Years of Brand-Channel Collaboration
WOOLMARK's partnership with Tmall Super Category Day began in 2019 and enters its eighth year in 2026. This year's campaign runs from September 22 to 24 under the theme 'Return to Real,' bringing together numerous domestic and international brands to showcase the natural qualities of Merino wool.
The industrial significance of this long-term collaboration lies in the fact that the deep binding between a certification body and an e-commerce platform is shortening the trust chain from farm to consumer. As a globally recognized textile mark, the Woolmark logo's value lies not only in quality endorsement but also in providing consumers with a verifiable fiber content identification system.
During the campaign, users can access the special page through Tmall or the mobile Taobao app to explore WOOLMARK-certified wool products. Brands are simultaneously promoting through Tmall flagship stores, livestreaming, and social media channels. For wool textile enterprises, this means the online exposure window for certified products is being concentrated, and inventory preparation and livestream scheduling need to precisely match the campaign cycle.
Competitive Landscape of the Natural Fiber Track
From an industrial belt perspective, the demand recovery for Merino wool products benefits wool textile clusters in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, cashmere and wool processing bases in Qingle, Hebei, and worsted enterprises such as Shandong Ruyi. However, it should be noted that the premium capacity of natural fibers is not evenly distributed—traceable and certifiable raw material sources are becoming the core variable in price stratification.
Polyester and other synthetic categories will not exit the mass market because of this, but their competitiveness in 'similar style' scenarios is being eroded by natural fibers. For synthetic fiber enterprises, the differentiation path lies in functionality and sustainability certification rather than pure price competition.
From an export perspective, Chinese consumers' emphasis on fiber composition resonates with European and American market regulations on sustainable textiles. If export-oriented wool textile enterprises can find a connection point between the domestic certification system and requirements such as the EU Product Environmental Footprint, they will gain cross-market compliance dividends.
