At 16,075 yuan per tonne, the nylon POY benchmark in late September stood 9.91% above the start of the month and just 875 yuan below its one-year high. More tellingly, it had climbed 4,775 yuan from the annual low of 11,300 yuan, leaving the yearly average of 13,313.52 yuan far behind. For weavers, this is not a mild cost fluctuation but a repricing of raw material that forces a fresh look at order quotes.

Price Position: What a High Band Means

Annual statistics place nylon POY in a "high" band, with the gap to the top turning negative, meaning the price is pressing against its one-year ceiling. A flat daily change does not signal weakness; it more likely reflects a standoff at high levels, with sellers unwilling to concede and buyers reluctant to chase.

This standoff transmits asymmetrically. Polymer and spinning segments, supported by caprolactam, hold stronger bargaining power, while weavers face rigid downstream apparel prices. If the POY rally cannot be passed through, processing margins in the middle of the chain will be squeezed.

The key question is whether this rally is cost-push or demand-pull. If it is mainly driven by upstream caprolactam, sustainability depends on that market. If weaving restocking is also at play, short-term momentum may persist.

Industrial Transmission: From Chips to Fabrics

Nylon POY is a direct input for nylon filament weaving, and its price moves cascade along the chain from chips to POY, DTY, weaving and dyeing. A near-10% rise in POY typically means DTY and FDY quotes follow within weeks, hitting sportswear, underwear and swimwear hardest.

For chemical-fiber clusters such as Keqiao and Shengze, a sharp raw material spike has two immediate effects. First, fabrics made from earlier low-priced inventory gain a temporary quoting advantage. Second, the pricing window for new orders is forced to shorten. Factories that take long orders at old prices risk margin erosion if the rally continues.

Exporters feel it more acutely. Overseas buyers are price-sensitive and often demand quarterly or semi-annual quotes. A near-10% monthly jump directly disrupts FOB pricing, and some orders may face renegotiation or delayed execution.

Trend Judgment: Can the High Band Hold?

With the price just below its annual peak, further gains need a new driver. If caprolactam stays firm and weaving utilization holds, POY may test the previous high. If downstream orders fail to follow, the high-level standoff could turn into a modest pullback.

Watch the psychological effect of a narrowing gap to the top. Near previous highs, traders and factories typically reduce chasing and turn cautious, so volume may fall before price does. Such volume-price divergence is often a leading signal of a cyclical top.

The gap between the annual average and the current price exceeds 2,700 yuan per tonne, indicating this is a late-year rapid rally rather than a gentle full-year uptrend. Such moves carry higher volatility and demand stronger inventory and hedging discipline.

Practical Advice

For Buyers - Avoid locking large long-cycle orders in one go; split into small, multi-batch purchases to reduce high-level risk - Watch DTY and FDY catch-up pace; if they lag POY, prioritize locking varieties not yet repriced - For signed but unexecuted contracts, check whether raw material clauses include adjustment mechanisms and add supplementary terms if needed

For Factories - Recalculate raw material costs for orders in hand and assess fulfillment risk for long orders below current POY levels - Increase use of lower-priced raw material inventory moderately, but avoid speculative stockpiling at highs - Negotiate shorter pricing windows with downstream customers to share price volatility along the chain

For Exporters - For orders already quoted to overseas buyers, proactively explain the raw material rally and seek a price adjustment window - Introduce raw material floating clauses in new quotes to avoid bearing price risk unilaterally - Monitor both currency and raw material volatility to prevent margins from being squeezed on both sides
