Nylon POY has posted a near double-digit gain within a single month, and the gap to its one-year high has narrowed to less than 900 yuan per ton. At this level, the real question for buyers is not whether to chase, but how to read the pace of cost transmission. Industry data shows the nylon POY benchmark stood at 16,075 yuan/ton on September 25, up 9.91% from 14,625 yuan/ton at the start of the month, with a flat daily change. The one-year range spans a low of 11,300 yuan/ton and a high of 16,950 yuan/ton, with a median of 14,125 yuan/ton, a gap of -875 yuan/ton to the top and 4,775 yuan/ton to the bottom, and an annual average of 13,313.52 yuan/ton.

Cost Drivers and Industrial Belt Response

From the annual average to the current level, nylon POY has completed a recovery of more than 20%, driven mainly by periodic tightness in upstream caprolactam. For nylon plants using chip spinning and direct spinning, raw material costs account for a high share of total costs. Once CPL spot premiums widen, passive upward revisions in POY quotes become almost unavoidable. This means the rally is not a broad-based demand explosion but a combination of cost push and rigid restocking, with price elasticity concentrated in the midstream.

The response across industrial belts has been mixed. Texturing and weaving enterprises in Xiaoshan and Shaoxing in Zhejiang are operating steadily, with nylon filament purchases mainly for rigid restocking and limited willingness to chase highs. Some warp-knitting and air-jet weaving mills in Changle, Fujian, and Shengze, Jiangsu, have seen more active inquiries as order visibility improves. Firm upstream quotes coexisting with cautious downstream buying suggests no consensus bullish view has formed, and inventory turnover at the trader level is the key variable for whether prices can hold at current levels in the short term.

It is worth noting that the current price is only 875 yuan/ton below the one-year high, while the gap to the bottom remains as wide as 4,775 yuan/ton. This asymmetric range structure means that if cost support weakens or downstream restocking slows, the downside correction space is far larger than the upside breakout space. For factories, the risk-reward ratio of locking in long-term orders at this point is deteriorating. For buyers, building positions in batches and shortening payment terms is more prudent than one-time stockpiling.

Transmission to Upstream and Downstream

Looking at supply chain transmission, rising nylon POY will gradually feed into DTY and FDY, but the efficiency depends on whether texturing margins can be maintained. If POY rises faster than downstream yarn prices, texturing profits will be squeezed, and some small and medium-sized texturers may choose to reduce operating rates, which in turn suppresses POY procurement demand. Once this negative feedback forms, high prices will be hard to sustain, and a correction could unfold in an abrupt-rise, slow-fall pattern.

For finished fabrics and apparel exports, nylon products are mainly used in sportswear, outdoor gear and underwear, where overseas orders are highly sensitive to raw material fluctuations. If the current increase cannot be absorbed by end users before the fourth quarter, some export orders may shift to polyester or blended alternatives, weakening the demand base for nylon. This is particularly critical for industrial belt enterprises focused on nylon filament, who need to assess the share of price-sensitive orders in their client structure in advance.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Treat the current level as a high-price zone and avoid locking in long-term orders covering more than two months of usage, using batch pricing to reduce timing risk - Monitor changes in the CPL spot-to-POY processing spread; a narrowing to historical lows can be read as a signal for phased restocking - Communicate pricing mechanisms with end clients in advance for price-sensitive orders to prevent raw material volatility from eroding margins

For Factories - Texturing and weaving enterprises should prioritize raw material supply for high-margin orders and moderately control order intake for low-margin ones - Closely track operating rate changes in industrial belts such as Xiaoshan, Changle and Shengze as leading indicators of real downstream demand - If the gap to the annual high narrows further to within 500 yuan/ton, consider moderately reducing raw material inventory days to guard against high-level correction risks
