A 9.91% gain in under a month has pushed the nylon POY benchmark price to 16,075 yuan per tonne as of 25 September, up from 14,625 yuan at the start of the month, according to industry data. The move places the fibre firmly in the upper reaches of its one-year range, where the low sits at 11,300 yuan and the high at 16,950 yuan. For downstream weavers and traders accustomed to cheaper feedstock, this is not a routine fluctuation but a repricing of the cost base.
What Is Driving the Surge
On the cost side, caprolactam, the key precursor for nylon POY, has tracked benzene prices higher, while maintenance shutdowns at several plants have tightened supply and lifted chip and spinning quotes in tandem. The data point showing a gap of only 875 yuan to the yearly peak is telling: the market is not testing higher levels tentatively but pressing against a prior ceiling.
On the demand side, September traditionally marks the start of the textile peak season, when warp-knitting, weft-knitting and lace producers release concentrated demand for nylon filament. New capacity has come on stream more slowly than expected, magnifying price elasticity. The one-year average of 13,313 yuan is more than 2,700 yuan below the current level, meaning most mills hold inventory booked at far lower costs. That flatters book profits today but signals higher restocking costs tomorrow.
Sentiment has reinforced the move. With the median price of 14,125 yuan left far behind, holders are reluctant to sell while buyers chase the rally. Yet the fact that the daily gain has flattened to zero suggests the rapid ascent may be pausing, with bulls and bears probing a new equilibrium.
Transmission Through the Chain
For polymerisers and spinners, current prices mean a clear cash-flow recovery and an incentive to restart idled capacity. That will add supply in the medium term and cap further gains, but restarts take time, so near-term tightness is unlikely to reverse quickly.
Downstream weaving and dyeing face mounting pressure. Nylon fabrics are widely used in sportswear, underwear, swimwear and lace, where end brands are highly cost-sensitive. If raw-material increases cannot be passed through to garment quotes, margins in the middle of the chain will be squeezed. Some small and medium mills may cut operating rates or switch to blended alternatives, which would in turn erode actual demand for nylon POY.
For exporters, currency swings and freight volatility compound the feedstock rise, narrowing the window for adjusting export quotes. European and US buyers typically lock prices quarterly, so if feedstock keeps climbing within a lock-in period, exporters risk selling below cost.
Risk and Opportunity at High Levels
With the price near its yearly peak and only 875 yuan from the top, upside is limited while downside risk is substantial. Should peak-season demand disappoint or caprolactam prices retreat, nylon POY could correct sharply. The yearly low of 11,300 yuan is a reminder of how violent this fibre's swings can be.
In the near term, however, low inventories, seasonal demand and cost support remain in place, so resilience should not be underestimated. The key for every link in the chain is not to call the top but to manage exposure between high and low prices.
