A price gap exceeding 50% between 15,500 yuan per ton and conventional staple fiber quotes appeared on the same polyester staple fiber pricing sheet. In early October 2026, this set of data superficially suggested sharp raw material volatility, but in essence points to a long-overlooked issue: industry pricing samples are being diluted by non-mainstream categories.
The Real Cause of Pricing Divergence
China is home to the world's most concentrated polyester staple fiber capacity, and conventional-grade products have long fluctuated within a narrow band near cost levels. Fiber balls, however, serve as water treatment filter media, and their pricing logic is tied to environmental engineering demand, with almost no connection to textile-grade staple fiber supply and demand. Placing the two under the same pricing framework inevitably produces misleading spreads.
The fiber ball quotes appearing in Zhengzhou, Henan, reflect the pricing inertia of the water treatment materials market, not the prosperity of textile raw materials. For buyers, using these as an anchor for staple fiber prices would directly skew cost accounting.
Industry public data shows that the processing spread between fiber-grade polyester chips and staple fiber has long remained stable within a reasonable range, and the cash flow cost support for conventional staple fiber has not fundamentally changed. This means the current pricing divergence is more a matter of statistical scope than a reversal in industry fundamentals.
Actual Transmission Through the Supply Chain
On the upstream side, the cost transmission of PTA and ethylene glycol still follows a mature mechanism, and staple fiber plants adjust their operating rates mainly based on inventory and order days for conventional specifications. High quotes for fiber ball categories will not change the production scheduling logic of polyester units.
On the downstream side, yarn mills and nonwoven factories base their procurement decisions more on delivered prices and payment terms for conventional staple fiber. If purchasing staff mistakenly include fiber ball quotes in their price comparison system, they may overestimate raw material costs, thereby affecting the competitiveness of yarn quotes.
From a regional perspective, spot transactions in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian—the three major staple fiber consumption regions—remain the core indicators for judging demand conditions. Fiber ball quotes in the Zhengzhou market hold no reference value for raw material procurement in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Fujian textile clusters.
Risk Warnings in Data Usage
When aggregating information, pricing platforms that fail to strictly categorize products may easily mix products from different application scenarios. Although polyester staple fiber and fiber balls share the word "fiber," they belong to two independent tracks: textile raw materials and water treatment consumables.
For mills, tracking marginal transaction prices, inventory days, and production-sales ratios for conventional specifications is more meaningful than following individual high quotes. For exporters, when quoting to overseas customers, they should clearly specify product specifications and application scenarios to avoid inaccurate quotes caused by data confusion.
