At 18,350 yuan per tonne, nylon FDY sits in an awkward middle ground: not a peak, not a trough, but squarely in the mid-high range of its one-year price band. It is over 4,000 yuan above the annual low of 14,175 yuan and 1,600 yuan below the annual high of 19,950 yuan. Prices have held flat, but this calm surface masks a fragile equilibrium between cost-side support and demand-side weakness.

The Cost Logic Behind Price Stability

The core feedstock for nylon FDY is caprolactam, which in turn tracks benzene and liquid ammonia. Over the past year, crude oil prices have fluctuated but remained relatively elevated, pushing up caprolactam production costs. For nylon polymerisation plants, the rigidity of raw material costs means that even when downstream orders are thin, there is limited room to cut prices.

Feedback from major production bases in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian suggests polymerisation unit operating rates are running between 70% and 80%. There has been no large-scale shutdown, nor a sprint to full capacity. This measured pace explains why prices have been able to hold at mid-high levels: no panic selling on the supply side, no explosive restocking on the demand side.

Another signal worth noting is the annual average price of 16,111 yuan per tonne. The current price is about 2,200 yuan above that average, confirming that the price centre has shifted upward in recent months. But the 1,600 yuan gap to the ceiling also reminds the market that upward pressure is real. For factories, this means profit margins are squeezed from both ends: raw material costs will not fall, and finished goods prices lack demand support.

The Real Temperature of Demand

The textile downstream is the key to whether nylon FDY can hold its current level. Feedback from weaving and warp-knitting enterprises indicates that autumn-winter fabric orders are starting slowly. Some factories are prioritising the digestion of earlier inventory, purchasing nylon filament on a need-only basis. There is no sign of concentrated stockpiling.

This relates to the application structure of nylon FDY. Nylon filament is heavily used in sportswear, yoga wear, swimwear and lingerie — elastic fabrics that continue to grow on the consumer side. But brands are managing inventory with increasing precision, shortening order cycles and reducing batch sizes. The demand pulses felt upstream are becoming weaker and less predictable. In other words, demand has not disappeared; it has been fragmented.

On the export front, China Customs data shows nylon filament export volumes have remained relatively stable over the past year, but unit prices are under pressure. Localised production capacity in Southeast Asia and the Middle East is ramping up, reducing reliance on Chinese nylon FDY imports. Exports are no longer a universal channel for absorbing domestic overcapacity. Factories must take the structural changes in the domestic market more seriously.

Industrial Chain Transmission and Expectations

From a transmission perspective, stable nylon FDY prices are not bad news for downstream weavers. Stable raw material prices mean fabric quotations can remain relatively transparent, making it easier for buyers to make pricing and stocking decisions. For traders, however, a flat price means no spread to capture, and speculative stockpiling interest will decline markedly.

The risk to watch is a sudden upward move in caprolactam prices triggered by crude oil volatility. Nylon FDY plants would then face a dilemma: raising prices could further dampen already weak demand, while holding prices would erode margins. In such a scenario, some small and mid-sized polymerisation plants may choose to reduce operating rates, creating a new supply-side contraction.

Conversely, if terminal orders are released in a concentrated burst late in the autumn-winter season, the current mid-high price could be pushed higher, approaching the annual high of 19,950 yuan. But given the generally cautious procurement strategies of brands, this scenario is unlikely. A more probable state is narrow-range oscillation between 17,500 and 19,000 yuan per tonne, waiting for clearer direction from either the cost side or the demand side.

For Buyers - With prices at mid-high levels, purchase on a need-only basis and avoid large-scale stockpiling; monitor weekly caprolactam spot quotes - When locking in medium- to long-term contract prices with suppliers, include adjustment clauses linked to raw material prices to reduce unilateral risk - Track operating rate changes at polymerisation units in Jiangsu and Zhejiang as a leading indicator of supply tightness

For Factories - During weak demand, prioritise scheduling of high-value differentiated products and control inventory of standard grades - Closely monitor localisation progress in export markets and prepare non-price competitive tools such as delivery reliability and customisation - Use the current flat-price window to renegotiate payment terms and settlement methods with downstream customers to improve cash flow
