At 7,327.25 yuan per ton, the PTA benchmark price settled in early October, flat month-on-month and just 34.95 yuan below the one-year peak. More telling is the spread: the yearly low touched 4,363.25 yuan, a range of nearly 3,000 yuan, while the annual average stands at 5,760 yuan. The current price is about 27% above that average, signaling a quiet redistribution of profits across the polyester chain.
Price Structure: A Plateau That Is Not Stable
Annual statistics place PTA at a "high" level, with the top gap negative, meaning upside room has shrunk to less than 35 yuan. Yet the bottom gap is a massive 2,964 yuan, indicating very distant support. This "can't go up, won't come down" pattern stems from a tug-of-war between cost and demand.
Upstream PX prices remain firm, providing rigid cost support for PTA, while downstream polyester chips, filament, and staple fiber show little willingness to follow. Public industry data flags overbought warnings on both 2-year and 3-year bases, suggesting the current price has deviated from its medium- to long-term center. For factories, the risk-reward ratio of chasing inventory higher is deteriorating.
Industrial Transmission: Who Bears the Pressure, Who Benefits
Polyester plants are the most direct victims of this plateau. Raw material costs are locked high, but end-use fabric and apparel price hikes are constrained by weak consumption, squeezing spreads from both sides. Weaving enterprises in clusters like Keqiao and Shengze report a predominance of small and short orders, with tougher negotiations on large or long-term contracts.
The trading segment is diverging. Export-oriented firms can hedge some risk through currency locks and forward contracts, while domestic middlemen face inventory depreciation. Notably, if the processing spread between PTA and polyester products continues to narrow, some older capacity may exit faster, which could actually improve supply-demand balance in the fourth quarter.
Buying Window: Staged Positions Beat One-Way Bets
Historically, PTA rarely stays above 7,000 yuan for long. Current prices nearly coincide with the yearly high, and further gains require new cost or demand catalysts. For buyers, heavy one-time positions carry significant risk; staged building and extended procurement cycles are more prudent.
Exporters must also watch the alignment of currency and order rhythms. RMB volatility directly erodes USD-denominated profits. If PTA stays high while the exchange rate moves unfavorably, actual margins could compress further. It is advisable to reserve a raw material fluctuation range in quotes or adopt floating price clauses.
