At 18,020 yuan per tonne, nylon DTY sits just 940 yuan below its one-year peak. According to public commodity data, the benchmark price held flat at the start of October, yet the annual range has stretched from a low of 13,560 yuan to a high of 18,960 yuan, with a median of 16,260 yuan. In other words, the current level is nearly 11% above the yearly midpoint, placing the market at a juncture that demands careful reassessment.
The Cost Logic Behind Elevated Prices
The upward shift in nylon DTY pricing is not an isolated event. Upstream, caprolactam—the core raw material for nylon chips—transmits its price movements directly to the DTY segment. Over the past year, periodic tightening on the raw material side, combined with rising energy costs, has collectively pushed up pricing benchmarks across the entire nylon chain. The gap between the annual average of 15,600.66 yuan and the current 18,020 yuan essentially reflects cost-push inflation rather than demand-driven prosperity.
From the perspective of industrial clusters, operating rates at major nylon production bases in Changle, Fujian, and Xiaoshan, Zhejiang, remain at moderate levels. Mills show no obvious impulse to expand capacity. This means the supply side offers some support for current prices, but it also signals cautious expectations for downstream demand. When prices sit at highs while operating rates stay lukewarm, the market tends to be in a fragile equilibrium.
Why Demand Cannot Keep Pace
In contrast to the firmness on the raw material side, demand from downstream textile and apparel sectors has been lackluster. Nylon DTY is primarily used in sportswear, underwear, swimwear, and outdoor textiles—categories that have not seen significant volume growth in recent quarters. On the export front, affected by global supply chain adjustments and shifting inventory strategies among some buyers, the growth rate of nylon fabric exports has flattened.
For buyers, the current price of 18,020 yuan means raw material costs account for a larger share of finished fabric costs. If end brands do not accept price increases, margins in the middle环节 will be squeezed. This pressure is already visible in fabric distribution hubs like Shengze and Keqiao—some traders have begun shortening their stocking cycles, shifting to small-batch, multi-frequency purchasing to hedge against price volatility.
Judging the Sustainability of High-Level Operations
From an annual statistical perspective, the current price has only 940 yuan of headroom to the peak, while enjoying a 4,460 yuan buffer from the trough. This asymmetric position suggests that further upward movement faces significant resistance, but a deep correction also requires trigger conditions. Two key variables matter: whether raw material prices such as caprolactam will loosen, and whether domestic and export demand for textiles and apparel will see a seasonal rebound in the fourth quarter.
If the raw material side remains strong while demand stays sluggish, nylon DTY will likely oscillate between 17,500 and 18,500 yuan per tonne, digesting the current level. For mills, this means production planning needs to be more flexible, avoiding large-scale raw material lock-ins at price peaks. For traders, hedging demand rises notably at current levels, making the use of futures tools to lock in processing margins a more rational choice.
