The competitive focus in athleisure is shifting from who is more technical to who is sexier. Lacoste's Spring 2027 collection, led by creative director Pelagia Kolotouros, draws inspiration from the heat generated by physical exertion, injecting a stronger sensual undertone into the crocodile-branded house. This is not an isolated style adjustment but a signal that the entire athleisure sector, after years of stacking functions, is returning to emotion and bodily perception. For fabric suppliers, this means stretch, breathability and hand-feel are being pushed higher simultaneously, and procurement logic needs recalibration.
From Function to Perception: The Shift in Athleisure Fabric Demand
Over the past five years, the core narrative of athleisure fabrics revolved around moisture wicking, antibacterial and odor-resistant properties, sun protection and cooling. But functional layering has entered a phase of diminishing marginal returns, and consumers are gradually desensitizing to spec-sheet selling points. By making heat the design origin, Kolotouros essentially replaces technical indicators with bodily sensation, placing more nuanced demands on upstream fabrics: elastic recovery must support large movements, breathability must match body temperature changes, and surface hand-feel must balance skin comfort with visual texture.
The impact of this shift on chemical fiber and knitting industrial belts is structural. Keqiao's polyester stretch fabrics and Changle's warp-knitted and weft-knitted products were previously graded mainly by运动 intensity. Now they must simultaneously address skin comfort and visual appeal. This means bicomponent elastic fibers, bio-based nylon and superfine denier polyester blends will gain more sampling opportunities.
From a price expectation perspective, the premium space for high-elastic blended fabrics is opening up. China Customs data shows that export unit prices for functional knitted fabrics have maintained moderate upward movement over the past three years, while athleisure orders are less price-sensitive than pure performance orders. For factories, this means that at equal weight, improving hand-feel through fiber combinations and dyeing and finishing processes offers more profit elasticity than simply expanding capacity.
Industrial Belt Response: Quick Response Matters More Than Scale
Design shifts at brands like Lacoste typically transmit to the mass athleisure market within two quarters. By then, fabric procurement will feature small batches, multiple orders and fast delivery. Traders in Keqiao and Shengze who still use thousand-ton minimum order quantities as a threshold may miss this round of design-driven small orders.
It is worth noting that the sensualization of athleisure does not equal lightweighting. On the contrary, it requires fabrics to maintain support while fitting closely without tightness. This places higher demands on the setting process in dyeing and finishing, meaning factories with differentiated finishing capabilities will gain bargaining power. Some knitting mills in Fujian and Guangdong have begun integrating antibacterial, cooling and elastic recovery into a single finishing process, a composite functional route that is closer to brands' actual needs.
From an export perspective, European brands are tightening scrutiny of sustainability certification. Lacoste's parent company MF Brands Group has been continuously increasing supply chain transparency in recent years, meaning exporters need to prepare GRS, OEKO-TEX or similar certification documents at the quotation stage. Functional fabrics without certification backing may be eliminated in the initial screening even at lower prices.
