The bargaining power in this autumn-winter wool fabric season is shifting from who is cheapest to who can reliably deliver function and quick response. In the worsted zone of China Light Textile City in Keqiao, inquiry density for double-faced wool, worsted wool and tencel-wool blends is clearly higher than for commodity fabrics, and the sell-through gap between differentiated and generic goods is widening.
Demand Structure: Parallel Large and Small Orders
Domestic e-commerce and secondary wholesalers are placing small trial orders and reorders, with smaller volumes but higher frequency. Export buyers focus more on functionality, color fastness and environmental attributes, and inquiries for high-quality blended fabrics are rising steadily. This means mills must adjust their order logic: instead of riding one hit style through the season, they need multiple colors and weights plus fast reorders to spread development costs.
Category divergence is equally clear. In the autumn-winter coat segment, thick double-faced wool, granular cashmere and alpaca blends remain hot, with camel, oatmeal, vintage burgundy and army green well stocked across a wide weight range. In business formalwear, worsted wool and wool-polyester blends see stable demand, with high-twist anti-wrinkle high-count wool suitable for suits, sets and trench coats. Lightweight autumn-winter dressing is driving tencel-wool and acetate-wool thin blends.
Notably, the application boundary of wool fabric is expanding. Beyond traditional garments, procurement for home soft furnishing, blankets and decorative capes continues to rise. For upstream yarn and greige producers, this adds a shipment channel independent of apparel brand ordering rhythms, helping digest tail-season inventory pressure.
Supply Side: Process Upgrades and Digital Flexibility Redraw Competition
Facing strong inquiries, a group of source mills in Keqiao is upgrading across raw materials, processes and services. They have connected raw material selection, greige weaving, eco dyeing, finished stock and custom sampling into a full chain, serving domestic brands, e-commerce wholesalers and cross-border buyers.
To address pilling, rough hand feel, homogenization and insufficient color fastness, the supply-side answer is upstream optimization: selecting high-quality sheep wool and modified functional blends, paired with singeing, anti-pilling setting, anti-static finishing and reactive eco dyeing to improve physical performance and stability. Once process barriers widen, profit space for low-price commodity goods will keep shrinking.
Digital tools are also changing how supply and demand connect. Large showrooms typically hold hundreds to over a thousand color cards, with stock supporting bulk orders as well as small-batch, multi-color urgent orders. AI fabric libraries and garment simulation tools compress sampling and preview cycles, accelerating collaboration between mills and apparel designers. For buyers, faster selection translates directly into an earlier launch window.
Three Main Lines: Functional Blending, Quick Response, Green Manufacturing
First, functional blending is becoming standard. As consumers demand easier-care fabrics, attributes such as machine washability, anti-static and heat-retaining warmth are becoming default directions for wool blends, with high-grade wool replacing low-end yarns.
Second, procurement is turning to flexible quick response. Downstream brand and e-commerce orders are fragmenting significantly, bulk long orders are declining, and small, urgent and repeat orders are rising. Source mills with complete production chains and fast sampling and delivery hold more market initiative.
Third, green manufacturing is becoming a hard threshold for exports. Overseas requirements for environmental performance and traceability keep rising, and eco dyeing processes, GRS recycled certification and responsible wool traceability systems are gradually becoming prerequisites for taking orders, forcing local mills to upgrade green production.
Backed by Keqiao's complete worsted industrial cluster, digitalization and green transformation will continue to drive change. Investment in recycled and functional wool R&D, plus the penetration of digital technology across production, is strengthening Keqiao's position in the global supply chain. For both buyers and sellers, the real story this season is not absolute volume, but who can first shift from price competition to capability competition.
