Keqiao's peak season has returned, but not in the shape it took three years ago. Sample card dispatches climbed noticeably in late September, yet average order sizes have shrunk. The word heard most often in storefronts has shifted from bulk orders to trial runs. That change matters more than foot traffic figures, because it rewrites how fabric suppliers plan production and calculate margins.

Order Structure Has Changed, and So Has the Value of Peak Season

Across the Dongsheng Road, East Market and North Market trading zones of China Textile City, heat-retaining fabrics, wool blends, elastic knits and brushed materials are drawing the most inquiries. Cooling temperatures combined with the pre-National Day launch window have pushed autumn-winter apparel and home textile fabrics into a stocking peak.

But downstream brands are tightening inventory, shifting procurement toward small-batch trial orders. At the industry data level, this fragmentation is especially pronounced in late September: volumes are rising, prices are stable, and individual order sizes are falling. For mills, this means more complex scheduling, faster style changes, and less room to spread unit management costs.

Several storefront managers note that the pre-holiday period is the critical window for confirming processes and sending samples, with production scheduled after the break. This rhythm transfers pressure from sales to production: whoever can respond quickly to small orders without sacrificing quality consistency will win repeat business this season.

Raw Material Volatility Is Compressing the Willingness to Take Orders

Recent upward swings in chemical fiber and cotton yarn prices are the variable merchants watch most closely. As cost pressure transmits to the fabric side, operators are noticeably more cautious, negotiating order by order and prioritizing risk control over order volume.

The logic is straightforward: small-batch quick-return orders already carry thin margins, and raw material volatility shortens the shelf life of any quotation. If a merchant locks in an old price, they may face a loss at delivery. As a result, shorter quote validity, higher deposit ratios and upfront process confirmation are becoming standard practice in Keqiao.

For buyers, this means a narrower price comparison window and less ability to lock in costs. For mills, it means reassessing which orders are worth taking and which categories should be actively trimmed. Competing purely on low price is especially fragile during raw material swings.

Export Tiering: Eco-Friendly and Functional Fabrics Command a Premium

Export buyer preferences are diverging. Recycled eco-friendly fabrics and functional products such as waterproof-breathable and anti-static materials carry stronger pricing power, while ordinary commodity fabrics remain stuck in price competition. Many merchants are cutting back on conventional stock and concentrating R&D resources on new materials and processes.

The exhibition-market linkage and livestreaming further amplify this tiering. Merchants reach remote and overseas clients through sample packs, real-shot videos and in-store broadcasts, combining online traffic with offline sampling to improve selection efficiency. Keqiao fabrics continue to ship to numerous countries and regions, and channel diversification reduces reliance on any single market.

Notably, this tiering is not a short-term phenomenon. As buyers begin screening suppliers by environmental standards and functional specifications, product development capability becomes an entry threshold rather than a bonus.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Shorten price comparison cycles and lock in processes and delivery dates early to avoid quote invalidation from raw material swings - When evaluating small-batch quick-return suppliers, prioritize style-change responsiveness and quality consistency over pure price pressure - Stock autumn-winter goods moderately ahead of schedule, but tie volumes to end-market sell-through data to prevent secondary inventory buildup

For Export Businesses - Focus quotations on recycled and functional fabrics, which offer clearly better pricing room than commodity goods - Use livestreaming and sample card pushes to maintain overseas clients and lower the barrier to physical sampling - Clarify raw material price-lock clauses before accepting orders to control a third cost risk beyond exchange rates and freight
