Three Chinese fiber producers have held Canopy's top Button Ranking tier for five consecutive years, and the significance lies less in the badge itself than in how it is becoming a filter on overseas brand sourcing lists. Canopy's 2026 Button Ranking update confirms that Jilin Chemical Fiber, Tangshan Sanyou and Xinxiang Chemical Fiber (Bailu Group) remain at the 'dark green shirt' level. For mills that fall short on pulp sourcing and chemical management, exclusion from mainstream fashion supply chains is becoming a real risk rather than a distant one.

The logic behind the rating

The Button Ranking functions as a fiber sourcing decision tool for brands, retailers and designers, helping them assess risk in forest-material supply chains. The 'dark green shirt' denotes a high standard of sustainable supply, while the separate 'dark green flask' points to chemical management capability. Taken together, they examine transparency across the whole chain from raw material origin to production emissions, not a single environmental label.

Beyond the top rating, Jilin Chemical Fiber earned an industry-leading 8.0 chemical management score and the 'dark green flask' recognition. Its rayon division is building green fiber brands including JIRECELL, REBOOCEL and ECOBAMBOO, expanding next-generation pulp use to cut virgin wood consumption, and running green power plus energy recovery systems. It has passed 18 certifications including EU-BAT and OEKO-STeP. The commercial conversion matters most: the rating has opened access to 550 domestic and international brand supply chains.

Tangshan Sanyou operates 830,000 tons of annual capacity across viscose staple, modal and lyocell, with over a hundred product varieties. Working with Canopy since 2015, it completed its fourth CanopyStyle audit and earned an 'NK' no-high-risk sourcing rating, while partnering with international recycled pulp producers to scale next-generation pulp. Its recycled fiber capacity reaches 40,000 tons per year, and the ReVisco line covers all three generations of cellulose fiber. Xinxiang Chemical Fiber holds a low-risk raw material rating and keeps iterating green products including bacterial grass fiber, BaiLu-Eco and recycled fiber.

Transmission through the chain

What these three share is that sustainable sourcing is embedded in supply chain management itself, not kept at the PR level. Jilin reduces virgin wood pulp dependence at the input end, Tangshan Sanyou scales recycled pulp, and Xinxiang approaches it through alternative feedstocks such as bacterial grass. Different routes, same direction: easing direct pressure on forest resources. This responds directly to tightening European regulation on deforestation risk, and explains why brands treat the rating as a screening criterion.

For downstream fabric and garment makers, upstream fiber credentials are transmitting into order decisions. Once a brand writes Canopy ratings into its sourcing specification, yarns and fabrics without matching certification lose the right to quote first, then lose pricing power. For fiber plants, green power, energy recovery and full chemical management raise short-term costs, but they buy a channel into 550 brand systems, an equation that is easier to justify through export order stability.

Priorities exporters must reassess

Green supply chains have shifted from a bonus to an entry requirement, a judgment that matters for export rhythm beyond 2026. Buyers may request fiber origin and chemical management proof at the inquiry stage, and mills unable to supply it alongside quotation will see longer negotiation cycles. The next things to track are the scaling pace of next-generation pulp and the cost curve of recycled fiber, which determine whether green fiber can move from premium orders down to mass categories.

For buyers - Front-load fiber sustainability qualification in supplier onboarding to avoid rework after orders are placed - For viscose, lyocell and modal, verify raw material risk ratings and chemical management scores first - Add recycled fiber to backup options to lock in medium-term pricing and supply stability

For exporters - Proactively collect Canopy ratings and EU-BAT, OEKO-STeP certificates from upstream to build a deliverable compliance pack - Mark fiber origin and green attributes on quotations to turn compliance into negotiating leverage - Monitor EU deforestation-related regulation and adjust orders built on virgin wood pulp in advance
