Holding the same top-tier sustainability rating for five consecutive years is not something a fiber producer can sustain through public relations alone. Canopy's annual Button Ranking has once again awarded its 'dark green shirt' status to three Chinese companies — Jilin Chemical Fiber, Tangshan Sanyou Chemical Fiber and Xinxiang Chemical Fiber — and the signal is unambiguous: global fashion brands now treat forest-material risk, chemical management and recycled feedstock ratios as entry requirements rather than bonus points.

The supply chain logic behind the rating

Canopy's ranking is widely used by brands and retailers when making fiber sourcing decisions, and scores are tied directly to whether a brand can claim its supply chain avoids ancient and endangered forests. For fiber producers, the top tier means inclusion in a whitelist that gets consulted repeatedly. Jilin Chemical Fiber's access to 550 domestic and international brand supply chains is more telling than the rating itself — it shows green certification is being converted into actual order pipelines.

From a industrial cluster perspective, this ranking update has a layered impact on viscose production regions. Leading firms use certification to build barriers, while smaller mills that cannot produce traceable pulp sources and chemical management records will be filtered out during brand audits. This is not price competition; it is compliance competition.

How the three firms differ

Jilin Chemical Fiber's strength lies in chemical management, earning an industry-high score of 8.0 and 'dark green flask' recognition. Its actions include expanding next-generation pulp applications, adopting green power production, building energy recovery systems, and passing 18 professional certifications including EU-BAT and OEKO-STeP. These investments look like costs in the short term but lock green advantages into brand procurement standards over time.

Tangshan Sanyou Chemical Fiber has an annual capacity of 830,000 tons, covering more than 100 product varieties including viscose staple fiber, modal and lyocell, with recycled fiber capacity of 40,000 tons per year. Its ReVisco line covers all three generations of cellulose fibers. Its raw material sources received a no-high-risk rating, and it completed its fourth CanopyStyle audit. Scale plus recycled fiber positioning means stronger delivery flexibility when taking large brand orders.

Xinxiang Chemical Fiber was rated low-risk on raw materials and focuses on source innovation, iterating products such as bacterial cellulose fiber, BaiLu-Eco and Recycled fiber. For buyers, these differentiated green products offer pricing room in functional fabric and eco-concept orders.

Real impact on exports and procurement

The EU is tightening sustainability regulations for textiles, and brands will only demand finer supply chain traceability. Fiber producers that only pursue end-point certification without reforming pulp sourcing and energy structures will struggle to hold their position in the next ranking cycle. Conversely, companies that have completed green power and recycled fiber layouts will gain more stable customer stickiness in export quotations.

For mills, the payback period on green power and full-process chemical management is shortening, because brand customers are willing to pay a premium for compliant capacity. For exporters, attaching supplier ratings and certifications to quotations is becoming standard practice in negotiations.

For buyers - Include Canopy ratings and chemical scores in supplier admission lists, prioritizing mills with next-generation pulp application records - For recycled fiber orders, require proof of three-generation cellulose fiber coverage and capacity data

For exporters - Front-load supplier green certifications and ratings in quotation materials to shorten brand compliance review cycles - Track EU sustainability regulation updates and prepare raw material traceability and green power documentation for clients in advance
