PTA prices have oscillated widely over the past year, ranging from 4363.25 yuan/ton to 6932.90 yuan/ton. The June 26 quote of 5717.66 yuan/ton sits near the yearly median of 5648.08 yuan/ton. While this level is not extreme in itself, the 8.65% monthly decline and 4.18% single-day drop indicate accelerating downward momentum.
Behind the Price Decline
Annual statistics reveal a peak-to-trough gap of nearly 2600 yuan/ton. The current price is 1354.41 yuan/ton above the yearly low but has fallen 1215.24 yuan/ton from the high. More notably, the price has dropped from 6258.75 yuan/ton at the start of the month at an average daily decline exceeding 0.5%, a slope rarely seen in the past six months.
Loose upstream PX raw material costs are the direct driver. International crude oil prices oscillate in the $60-70/barrel range, PX cracking spreads have narrowed, and cost support for PTA has weakened significantly. Meanwhile, domestic PTA plant operating rates remain above 75%, with no signs of active supply contraction.
Feedback from the downstream polyester sector is equally critical. Operating rates at Jiangsu-Zhejiang weaving mills have fallen to around 65% during the traditional June off-season. Terminal garment orders are mainly for just-in-time replenishment, with speculative buying intentions low. Polyester plant inventory days have rebounded to over 15, and procurement of PTA has slowed markedly.
Transmission Effects on the Chemical Fiber Chain
As the core raw material for polyester filament and staple, PTA price fluctuations directly impact downstream fabric costs. The current PTA price near the median means cost support for polyester filament is shifting from the high range to the mid-range.
For polyester filament producers, lower PTA prices should ease raw material cost pressure, but the problem is that terminal demand has not rebounded simultaneously. Polyester plants face a dilemma between reducing inventory through price cuts and protecting profit margins. If they follow PTA down, margins shrink; if they hold prices, inventory risk rises.
Weaving mills in major polyester filament producing areas like Shengze and Changxing have already sensed this change. Some small and medium-sized mills have reduced raw material inventory days from the typical 7-10 days to within 5 days to mitigate the risk of further price declines.
Market Expectations and Operating Windows
Historically, PTA prices face seasonal pressure in June-July, but this year is compounded by weak macro demand and capacity releases. Industry public data shows that about 3 million tons of new PTA capacity came online in the first half of 2026, with supply increments concentrated in Q2, further suppressing price recovery.
For textile enterprises, the current PTA price near the median is not an absolute low, but the 8.65% monthly decline has already released some risk. If PX prices continue to weaken or polyester operating rates fall further, PTA prices may test the 5500 yuan/ton level.
