On June 26, 2026, the polyester staple fiber (PSF) market delivered a set of sharply contrasting price signals. Water-treatment fiber balls (standard grade, diameter 30-50mm) held firm at 15,500 CNY/ton, maintaining a high plateau for several months. In contrast, the mainstream spinning-grade PSF (1.56dtex*38mm, melt-spun cotton type) was quoted at 7,330-7,250 CNY/ton, showing signs of easing from earlier highs. This divergence reflects the different demand dynamics across downstream sectors.
Price Divergence: Two Products, Two Logics
The resilience of fiber ball prices rests on a unique supply-demand foundation. These products are primarily used in industrial water treatment and oilfield injection water filtration, where downstream clients are municipal projects and energy firms with long order cycles and relatively low price sensitivity. Since Q4 2025, stricter environmental policies have driven a concentrated release of demand for upgrading aging water treatment facilities, strengthening suppliers' bargaining power. Henan Kaijie Water Treatment, a major quoter, has maintained the 15,500 CNY/ton level for several consecutive weeks, indicating a tight market.
In contrast, spinning-grade PSF prices have softened. Zhejiang Tianchen Textile Supply Chain, quoting from Suqian, Jiangsu, saw prices slip from around 7,450 CNY/ton in early June to the current 7,250-7,330 CNY/ton range, a decline of approximately 1.6%-2.7%. This trend is directly linked to weak textile end-demand: summer apparel orders are winding down, while autumn/winter stocking has yet to ramp up. Cotton spinning mills are operating at only 60-70% capacity, limiting PSF purchases to small, need-based orders that cannot support prices.
Regional and Channel Differences: The Logic Behind Suqian Quotes
Notably, the spinning-grade PSF quotes came from Suqian, Jiangsu, with the brand Yida. Suqian is an emerging textile cluster in northern Jiangsu, leveraging capacity from giants like Hengli and Yida to build a full chain from PET chips to PSF, weaving, and dyeing. Quotes from this region are typically 50-100 CNY/ton lower than traditional trading hubs like Shaoxing or Xiaoshan, due to lower logistics and warehousing costs. The 7,250 CNY/ton low may exert a ripple effect on procurement decisions in neighboring Shandong and Anhui markets, potentially dragging down regional averages.
Upstream-Downstream Transmission: PTA Volatility and Inventory Pressure
A key variable behind the PSF price easing is the raw material side. Since mid-June, spot PTA prices have oscillated in the 5,800-6,000 CNY/ton range, down about 3% from May highs. This has weakened cost support for polyester plants, creating room for PSF price cuts. Meanwhile, industry operating rates remain above 80%, with social inventories slowly accumulating. Some small and medium traders are under destocking pressure and are more willing to offer discounts.
For fiber balls, although they share the same PSF raw material, their processing involves needling, heat setting, and other deep-processing steps that add significant value. Raw material costs account for only about 40% of the final price, so PTA fluctuations have a limited impact. Additionally, water treatment orders are mostly annual framework agreements, giving them far less short-term price elasticity than spinning-grade products.
