A single price list has exposed a long-overlooked structural fracture in the polyester staple fiber (PSF) market. On June 26, 2026, domestic PSF prices showed an extreme divergence: water treatment fiber balls (standard grade) were quoted at 15,500 RMB/ton, while textile-grade PSF (1.56dtex*38mm cotton type) was only 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton — a gap of 8,170-8,250 RMB/ton.

This means that for the same polyester raw material, prices can more than double depending solely on end-use application. This is not simple market fluctuation but clear evidence of a functional divergence within the PSF industry chain.

Industrial Logic Behind Price Divergence

Looking at the detailed quotes, the water treatment fiber balls were supplied by Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd., originating from Zhengzhou, with prices concentrated at 15,500 RMB/ton for diameters of 30mm, 40mm, and 50mm. In contrast, textile-grade PSF was quoted by Zhejiang Tianchen Textile Supply Chain Co., Ltd., with origin from Yida (Suqian, Jiangsu), specification 1.56dtex*38mm melt-spun cotton type, priced at 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton.

Although both products are called "polyester staple fiber," they belong to different market segments. Water treatment fiber balls are mainly used in industrial wastewater purification and circulating water treatment. Their high premium reflects rigid demand driven by stricter environmental policies in recent years. Textile-grade PSF, however, directly serves traditional downstream sectors like yarn and nonwovens, squeezed by weak consumer demand and overcapacity.

From an industrial belt perspective, Suqian, as an important chemical fiber production base in Jiangsu, offers prices that better reflect real textile market supply-demand dynamics. The 7,250 RMB/ton level is approaching the cash cost line for some producers; further declines could trigger capacity closure among small and medium players. Meanwhile, Zhengzhou, as a hub for water treatment industries, shows the independent pricing logic of environmental material markets.

Transmission Effects for Textile Buyers

A price gap exceeding 8,000 RMB/ton directly implies that textile-grade PSF prices lack upward momentum in the near term. Three reasons:

  • High margins in water treatment fibers will attract some polyester capacity to shift toward that segment, but conversion takes time and cannot quickly relieve supply pressure on the textile side.
  • Textile-grade PSF currently faces a "weak cost support, weak demand pull" dual weakness. Upstream PTA and MEG prices have been volatile and weak recently, while downstream yarn mills show low purchasing willingness, mostly restocking on a need-to basis.
  • The 7,250 RMB/ton price is already below full costs for some producers, but has not yet triggered large-scale production cuts. This means room for further decline exists but is limited.

Historically, the price spread between PSF and cotton is another key indicator. Currently, PSF is about 2,000 RMB/ton cheaper than cotton spot, so substitution effects are accumulating, but need further cotton price weakness to materialize.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Maintain a low inventory strategy in the short term, with a safety line of 7-10 days of consumption, to avoid inventory depreciation from further price drops. - Monitor the price gap between water treatment fibers and textile PSF. If the gap narrows to within 5,000 RMB/ton, it may signal textile demand recovery or supply contraction. - Consider signing "price guarantee" or "floating pricing" contracts with suppliers to lock in partial volumes and hedge against price volatility.

For Foreign Trade Companies - When quoting export orders, estimate PSF costs at 7,200-7,300 RMB/ton, reserving a 5% negotiation margin. - Track PSF price trends in Southeast Asian markets. If the domestic-international spread widens beyond 500 RMB/ton, consider transshipment or local sourcing. - Water treatment fiber products offer higher export profit margins; evaluate the feasibility of modifying production lines to move into higher-value-added segments.

The price split in the PSF market will not last forever. As the fat margins in water treatment fibers attract more capacity, premiums will gradually shrink. And once textile-side capacity cleanup is complete, prices will find a floor and rebound. For industry players, the current task is not to guess the bottom, but to manage cash flow and inventory flexibility.
