A price spread of over RMB 1,000 per ton for the same chemical raw material on the same trading day is rare in the PTA market over the past two years. On June 26, domestic PTA spot quotes ranged from RMB 5,750 to RMB 6,800 per ton, a gap of RMB 1,050. This number alone encapsulates the upstream contradictions in the polyester chain.
Event Background
Public quote data showed clear price stratification in the PTA market that day. Nantong Zhonghe Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd. quoted PTA from Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical at RMB 6,800/ton, delivered to Nantong, Jiangsu. Wuhan Hengjiu Chemical Co., Ltd. also quoted Yisheng Dahua PTA at RMB 6,800/ton, delivered to Hubei.
Meanwhile, Nanjing Shuangjie Chemical Co., Ltd. offered a sharply different price: Yisheng Dahua PTA at RMB 5,750/ton, and Hengli Dalian PTA also at RMB 5,750/ton, both delivered to Suzhou, Jiangsu. The gap between these and the RMB 6,800 quotes reached RMB 1,050.
This gap cannot be explained by regional differences alone. Nantong and Suzhou are both in Jiangsu, only about 100 km apart, and transportation costs cannot justify such a huge price disparity. Notably, the low-end quote of RMB 5,750/ton is approaching the cash cost line for some PTA producers.
Industry Impact
The widening PTA price spread essentially reflects a severe divergence in market expectations. High-end quoters may be pricing based on inventory costs, contract customer ties, or regional supply-demand tightness, while low-end quoters prioritize quick sales and cash recovery, holding a pessimistic view of short-term demand.
From a chain perspective, PTA is the direct raw material for polyester filament and staple fiber, accounting for about 70%-80% of polyester product costs. If PTA prices remain in the low range, they will directly drag down polyester filament prices, impacting grey fabric and finished fabric cost structures. For weaving mills, increased raw material cost uncertainty means shorter windows for procurement decisions.
- For large polyester plants: Those with captive PTA capacity can enjoy cost advantages, squeezing margins of SMEs that rely on external PTA purchases.
- For traders: A wider spread means more arbitrage opportunities, but also higher inventory depreciation risks.
- For downstream mills: They must closely monitor the linkage between PTA futures and spot quotes to avoid concentrated stockpiling at high prices.
Current PTA industry operating rates hover around 75%-80%, with social inventories at moderately high levels. Given no significant recovery in end-use textile and apparel demand, the weak PTA trend is unlikely to reverse in the short term.
