The same brand and grade of PTA was quoted at 5,750 yuan/ton in Suzhou but 6,800 yuan/ton in Hubei, a gap of 1,050 yuan. This far exceeds normal logistics costs from East China to Central China, signaling not a transport issue but a market truth about regional supply-demand imbalances.

For polyester chain veterans, this divergence means two things: downstream demand has not recovered as expected, and upstream inventory pressure is shifting from plants to traders.

Regional Logic Behind Price Divergence

According to industry public data, on June 26, 2026, Yisheng Dahua premium-grade PTA was quoted at 5,750 yuan/ton in Suzhou, Jiangsu, and 6,800 yuan/ton in Hubei. The same day, Yangzi Petrochemical's premium grade was quoted at 6,800 yuan/ton in Nantong, Jiangsu.

Suzhou and Nantong are neighboring cities in the same province, yet the price gap reached 1,050 yuan/ton. This is no longer simple regional pricing—it tells the industry that PTA supply in East China is becoming excessive, while Central China, with longer logistics and lower local inventories, maintains higher prices.

For polyester plants, this means procurement strategies must shift from focusing on national averages to tracking regional spreads. Relying on a single trader's quote could mean buying cheap in Suzhou but failing to deliver on time, forcing acceptance of Hubei's high prices.

Downstream Transmission: PTA to Polyester Filament to Weaving

PTA is the direct raw material for polyester filament yarn, which is the core input for weaving. PTA price divergence will transmit down the chain.

Currently, low PTA prices in East China may prompt local polyester filament plants to restock temporarily, lowering their costs and putting pressure on grey fabric prices. In Central China, high PTA prices will raise local polyester filament costs, weakening the price competitiveness of regional weaving mills.

This 'hot and cold' scenario presents both opportunity and risk for downstream buyers. The opportunity lies in sourcing from low-price regions; the risk is that regional spreads widen further, distorting profit distribution across the chain.

On the demand side, textile and apparel export growth has slowed since Q2 2026, and domestic consumption shows no significant recovery. Weaving mill operating rates remain at 60-70%, with polyester filament purchases strictly for immediate needs, no stockpiling. This directly slows PTA inventory digestion, forcing traders to cut prices.

Trader vs. Plant Tension Intensifies

Notably, traders played a key role in this divergence. Nanjing Shuangjie Chemical quoted both Yisheng Dahua and Hengli Dalian PTA at 5,750 yuan/ton, while Nantong Zhonghe Chemical and Wuhan Hengjiu Chemical quoted 1,050 yuan higher.

This reflects different inventory costs and cash flow pressures among traders. Low-price traders may face inventory overhang and need to raise cash quickly; high-price traders may have tight supply or stable downstream clients unwilling to cut prices.

For PTA plants, this divergence means pricing power is shifting to the trading tier. If plants insist on holding prices while traders dump at lower levels, plant inventory pressure will mount. Conversely, if plants cut prices proactively, it could trigger expectations of further declines, suppressing downstream buying.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Monitor East China vs. Central China PTA spreads closely. When the spread exceeds 800 yuan/ton, prioritize East China low-cost sources, evaluating logistics costs and delivery time. - Establish inquiry mechanisms with multiple traders. In the current market, spreads between traders for the same brand can exceed 500 yuan/ton. - Keep raw material inventory cycles at 7-10 days to avoid holding excess stock during a downward price trend.

For Polyester Plants - Adjust production plans based on PTA regional spreads: when East China PTA is cheap, raise polyester filament operating rates to spread fixed costs; when Central China PTA is expensive, prioritize inventory consumption over external purchases. - Sign quarterly or monthly contracts with PTA plants to lock in some low-cost supply, avoiding passive procurement in volatile spot markets. - Monitor weaving mill operating rates: if rates stay below 65%, proactively cut polyester filament prices to accelerate destocking.
