When water treatment fiber balls are priced at 15,500 RMB/ton while spinning-grade polyester staple fiber (PSF) sells for only 7,330 RMB/ton, market participants must ask: what industrial reality does this 8,000 RMB gap reflect?
On June 26, 2026, two sets of quotes from Henan Kaijie and Zhejiang Tianchen sliced the PSF market into two distinct worlds. One group featured ordinary fiber balls with diameters of 30-50mm, all quoted at 15,500 RMB/ton. The other group was 1.56 dtex × 38mm cotton-type melt-spun PSF, quoted at 7,330 and 7,250 RMB/ton. These are not the same product, nor even the same arena.
Product Attributes Define Pricing Logic
Fiber balls are deeply tied to the water treatment industry. Their core selling point is filtration performance, not textile processability. A diameter of 30-50mm means they cannot enter the spinning process—spinning-grade fibers typically range from 32-51mm in length and require specific crimp, strength, and evenness. Fiber balls are primarily used in industrial wastewater treatment and circulating water purification, making them environmental consumables.
In contrast, the cotton-type PSF quoted at 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton is the key raw material for spinning mills and nonwoven fabric factories. A fineness of 1.56 dtex is close to cotton fiber, and a 38mm length suits cotton spinning equipment. The melt-spun process implies large output and strong cost control. The price of such PSF is closer to the supply-demand fundamentals of the bulk chemical fiber market.
Since the second half of 2025, spot prices of cotton-type PSF have fluctuated within a 7,000-7,800 RMB/ton range. The June 2026 quotes of 7,250-7,330 RMB sit at the lower end, reflecting sluggish downstream spinning demand and elevated inventory pressure.
Industrial Cluster and Supply Chain Differences
The quotes clearly indicate origin and delivery location. Fiber balls come from Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd., with delivery in Zhengzhou, Henan. Henan is a major production area for water treatment chemicals and filter media, leveraging local mineral and chemical resources to form a cluster of fiber balls, quartz sand, and activated carbon.
Cotton-type PSF is produced by Yida, with delivery in Suqian, Jiangsu. Suqian belongs to the northern Jiangsu textile industrial cluster, surrounded by yarn covering, sewing thread, and home textile fabric enterprises in Shuyang and Siyang. As a representative of melt-spun capacity, Yida's quotes directly reflect procurement costs for spinning mills in Suqian and its vicinity.
This geographic and industrial chain mismatch means the two product types have completely different transportation radii and customer structures. Water treatment fiber balls serve wastewater plants, power stations, and chemical plants—low frequency, small batch sizes, low quality sensitivity. Spinning-grade PSF serves yarn and weaving mills—high frequency, large batches, extremely sensitive to price and quality.
Implications for Procurement and Foreign Trade
From a foreign trade perspective, water treatment fiber balls fall under environmental equipment accessories. When exported to industrial projects in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa, they are often quoted as kits or project-based, with high unit value but low frequency. Cotton-type PSF, however, is the front-end raw material in the textile export chain. Its price fluctuations directly impact the cost competitiveness of grey fabrics, finished fabrics, and garments.
The current cotton-type PSF price of 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton keeps raw material cost pressure manageable for export enterprises relying on polyester (e.g., taffeta, pongee, polyester-cotton blends). However, if crude oil rebounds in the second half of the year, driving PTA up, PSF prices could return above 7,800 RMB.
