The polyester staple fiber market is experiencing a rare price divergence. On June 26, 2026, public quotes showed fiber balls for water treatment holding firm at 15,500 RMB/ton, while textile-grade PSF dropped to 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton, creating a spread of over 8,200 RMB—a multi-year high. This extreme divergence is not a short-term fluctuation but a signal of deep structural shifts in industrial demand.

The Industrial Logic Behind Price Divergence

The firmness of industrial-grade fiber balls reflects rigid demand from environmental protection and water treatment sectors. Suppliers like Henan Kaijie have kept prices for 30-50mm diameter fiber balls stable at 15,500 RMB/ton for consecutive days, with little room for negotiation. These products are mainly used in industrial wastewater filtration and power plant circulating water systems, where customers are mostly large state-owned enterprises and municipal projects with stable procurement cycles and relatively low price sensitivity.

For textile-grade PSF, the situation is starkly different. Yida brand 1.56dtex*38mm cotton-type staple fiber, quoted in Suqian, Jiangsu, has fallen from around 7,600 RMB/ton at the start of the year to 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton. Moreover, the same specification from the same brand showed an 80 RMB price gap between different traders, typically indicating high inventory levels and increasing sales pressure, forcing traders to compete on price for limited orders.

The Transmission Dilemma in Downstream Textiles

Textile-grade PSF mainly flows to spinning mills for producing polyester-cotton blended yarn and pure polyester yarn, eventually entering apparel and home textile sectors. The current price range of 7,250-7,330 RMB/ton is approaching the breakeven line for some small and medium-sized melt-direct spinning mills. Industry data shows that for the melt-direct process using PTA and MEG, the full cost of PSF is around 7,100-7,200 RMB/ton, leaving only razor-thin margins.

More concerning is that weak prices have not stimulated downstream purchasing. Industry data indicates that since June, the operating rate of weaving mills in Jiangsu and Zhejiang has fallen from 75% to about 68%, with grey fabric inventories accumulating. After a brief recovery in April-May, export orders for textile-grade polyester softened again in late June, particularly for polyester fabrics destined for the EU. This negative feedback loop of "lower prices, stronger wait-and-see" is squeezing the profit pool of the entire polyester chain.

Regional and Channel-Based Responses

Geographically, the quotes reveal the concentration effect of industrial clusters. Yida's PSF quotes originate from Suqian, Jiangsu, a key chemical fiber cluster in northern Jiangsu. Suqian and surrounding counties like Shuyang and Siyang host many small and medium-sized spinning mills, which serve as the "price anchor" for the regional market. When these mills adopt a "buy-as-needed, replenish in small batches" strategy, traders are forced to cut prices to maintain cash flow.

In contrast, the stability of industrial fiber ball prices in Zhengzhou, Henan, benefits from the centralized procurement model of the water treatment industry. Two product categories, two regions, and two pricing logics together form the current binary structure of the PSF market.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Textile-grade PSF still has downside risk. Maintain low inventory and adopt weekly small-batch replenishment; avoid locking in large volumes above 7,250 RMB/ton. - Closely monitor PTA feedstock price trends. If PX-PTA producers cut output to support prices, PSF may find temporary support around 7,000 RMB/ton, presenting a potential buying opportunity. - Industrial fiber ball prices are unlikely to drop soon. Sign quarterly framework agreements with suppliers to secure supply and avoid premium pricing during peak environmental inspection seasons.

For Exporters - Adjust export offers for PSF in line with domestic spot prices. Southeast Asian inquiries are increasing but with aggressive price targets; competitive offers are around CFR 900-920 USD/ton. - Monitor anti-dumping investigations against Chinese PSF in India and Vietnam. If trade barriers escalate, export prices could face further pressure, so consider diversifying into Middle Eastern or African markets as alternative channels.
