One out of every five sweaters worldwide comes from a single town—Dalang, Dongguan. On June 24, this town simultaneously hosted three top-tier wool textile events: the 23rd 'Knitwear Fair', the 10th Textile Intangible Cultural Heritage Conference, and the 95th International Wool Textile Conference. The unprecedented triple convergence not only made industry history but also sent a strong signal that China's woolen knitting industry is shifting from scale-driven to a dual-engine model of technology and culture.
Data-Driven Industry Foundation
Dalang's entire woolen knitting chain has an annual transaction value exceeding 72 billion yuan, backing its title as 'World Capital of Woolen Knitwear'. Over 40 years of accumulation have built a complete ecosystem from yarn R&D and knitting equipment to garment design and market sales. Two-thirds of China's fancy yarn patents originate from Dalang, with nearly 10,000 new yarn varieties developed annually, creating a moat in upstream materials.
On the equipment side, 150,000 computerized flat knitting machines and nearly 10,000 integrated forming machines have achieved full digitalization of core processes. This means the design-to-delivery cycle for a sweater has shrunk from 7-10 days to 2-3 days, with product quality rates exceeding 99%. For buyers, this translates directly into faster lead times and more stable quality.
The 'Double-Sided Embroidery' of Tech and Heritage
The most noteworthy aspect of this year's fair is not its scale but the clear shift in technological direction. The launch of an AI sweater model has fundamentally changed the design phase. The OPC intelligent agent for knitwear design can automatically generate styles, create pattern designs, and decompose process parameters, significantly lowering the design barrier. In the AI customization experience zone, visitors experienced a '2-hour rapid garment-making' service, backed by a fully digital workflow.
Simultaneously, functional yarns became the focal point of the exhibition. Nano-level waterproof, oil-proof, and anti-fouling yarns, continuous cooling and UV-blocking yarns, and heat-generating yarns were showcased. These are not just concepts but are already in mass production, meaning the woolen knitting category is expanding from traditional warmth needs to outdoor, sports, and business scenarios.
Parallel to technology is the deep integration of intangible cultural heritage. A collection of 36 original knitwear pieces, using 'Kirin Blue' and 'Auspicious Beast Crimson' as primary colors, blended traditional motifs with modern silhouettes. This 'heritage + industry' model endows Dalang products with cultural premium, offering a path for differentiation in brand competition.
Global Index and Platform: The Battle for Influence
The decision by the 95th International Wool Textile Conference to launch a global wool textile industry index in Dalang is a landmark move. Historically, pricing power and trend-setting have been dominated by Western institutions; the Dalang index signals that Chinese industrial clusters are transitioning from 'manufacturing bases' to 'rule-makers'.
The advancement of the 'Dalang Knitting Valley & Greater Bay Area Wool Spinning Meeting Room' project further reinforces this trend. Positioned as a world-facing comprehensive service platform for the wool textile industry, it is located at the exit of Metro Line 1 in Dalang, offering superior location advantages. The 'Eye of Dalang' is not just an architectural landmark but also a hub for global display and trade. For foreign trade companies, this equates to a permanent overseas showroom.
