A fashion show is rewriting the narrative logic of Tianmen's apparel industry in Hubei Province.
On the evening of June 27, the 'Tianmen Yishang' Golden Top Award designer collaboration show took place at the Tianmen Sports Center, curated by Liu Yong, a two-time winner of China's top fashion design honor, the 'Golden Top Award.' This show is more than a visual spectacle—it reveals the true ambition of an industrial cluster to shift from volume-driven production to brand building.
Brand Gap After E-commerce Explosion
The growth of Tianmen's apparel industry has been astonishing. Public data shows that Tianmen's apparel e-commerce transaction value surged from 7 billion yuan in 2021 to over 70 billion yuan in 2025, a tenfold increase in four years. The number of market entities has reached 43,000, with products distributed to over 150 countries and regions.
However, behind this rapid growth, brand building has lagged significantly. Many enterprises still operate on white-label or OEM models, with profit margins squeezed by channels and platforms. As the industry scale crosses the hundred-billion threshold, brand premium has become a necessary supplement, otherwise, the risk of falling into low-price homogeneous competition looms.
This is the core mission of the regional public brand 'Tianmen Yishang,' launched in 2023. The brand has established a management system covering 6 major categories, 26 secondary sub-systems, and 194 standards, and has won the gold award in the 'Hubei Brands I Love' TV competition. But for a regional brand to generate market premium, it must find an anchor to connect with consumers.
Industrial Logic of Designer Collaboration
This collaboration with Liu Yong is essentially an experiment in brand value anchoring. With nearly 30 years of experience, Liu has served brands like Septwolves and K-boxing, excelling in color matching and guochao (national trend) design, with rich experience in brand operation. Choosing a designer with an industrial background, rather than a purely artistic one, reveals Tianmen's clear demand for commercial viability.
From an industrial perspective, the landing path of this show is noteworthy: some exhibited works will directly enter the 'Tianmen Yishang' brand product system and be marketed through local mature e-commerce channels and cross-border networks, achieving a closed loop of 'runway as marketplace, design as product.' This means brand premium is no longer just a concept but directly converted into sellable goods.
For buyers, this model lowers the design threshold—they can access Golden Top Award-level design resources without building a costly in-house design team. For factories, it means shifting from passive order-taking to active participation in product definition, helping improve profit margins.
Common Challenges in Regional Branding
Tianmen is not alone. Many domestic textile and apparel industrial clusters face similar transformation pressures: Keqiao fabrics, Shengze greige, Nantong home textiles—these clusters are globally leading in scale but generally weak in brand premium.
The challenge for regional brands is balancing unified quality endorsement with maintaining enterprise differentiation. 'Tianmen Yishang' controls quality through its 194-standard system while using designer collaboration as a differentiation lever. This 'standard + design' dual-drive strategy may offer a reference path for other clusters.
But risks remain: Can designer collaboration sustain market appeal? How can a regional brand avoid becoming a mere 'upgraded OEM'? The answers depend on Tianmen's ability to balance supply chain responsiveness, quality control execution, and design iteration cycles.
