China's down industry is witnessing a rare divergence between domestic and international markets. Data for the first five months of 2026 paints a clear picture: total export value fell 14.2% year-on-year, while imports surged 46.5%, with a monthly spike of 66% in May. This divergence reflects a confluence of overseas consumption cycles and domestic upgrading, signaling an accelerated structural shift.
Export Pressure: Cyclical and Structural Factors
From January to May, total down exports reached approximately $650 million, down 14.2% year-on-year, with the decline widening from the first four months. This trend mirrors a global consumer goods cycle, as major overseas markets slow inventory digestion, prompting brands to adopt conservative procurement. However, this is not the full picture. Industry data shows that Chinese down enterprises are pivoting from low-value-added filling materials to functional, high-fill-power products. The export drop may partly represent a 'volume-down, quality-up' transition, with the long-term fundamentals of industrial upgrading intact.
Import Surge: Rising Raw Material Prices and Demand
In stark contrast, imports are booming. Total import value reached $350 million, up 46.5% year-on-year, with monthly growth accelerating. In May alone, imports hit $87.09 million, a 66% surge from a year earlier, compared to 15.2% in April. This acceleration highlights mounting import momentum.
Raw down imports are particularly telling. Volume grew 13.1% to 15,000 tons, but value soared 70.3% to $170 million. The value growth far outpaced volume, indicating sharp price increases for premium global down. In May, raw down import volume rose just 9.5%, while value skyrocketed 118.6%. This 'stable volume, soaring price' pattern results from tight global supply of premium down and expanding domestic demand for high-quality materials. Key producing regions like Hungary and Poland face output fluctuations due to climate and breeding cycles, while domestic brands demand higher fill power and lower oxygen consumption, forcing manufacturers to increase purchases of overseas premium raw materials.
Premium Apparel Imports Rise: Another Facet of Upgrading
Down apparel imports also reflect this trend. From January to May, imports reached 2.017 million pieces, up 25.3% in volume and 29.9% in value to $180 million. The faster value growth suggests rising average unit prices, as domestic consumers increasingly seek high-end foreign down brands. This aligns with the 'light luxury' and functional evolution of China's down jacket market, where consumers demand better warmth, design, and brand cachet, filling a gap in domestic supply.
Industry Impact and Practical Recommendations
The divergence presents distinct opportunities and challenges. Upstream suppliers face pressure to improve quality standards or risk marginalization in the premium raw material race. Midstream manufacturers can use the export downturn as a window to pivot toward high-fill-power, high-cleanliness products that meet domestic demand.
