Changle, Fuzhou, China's largest production base for synthetic-cotton blended yarn, is undergoing a digital transformation. From June 22 to 23, 2026, a series of events focused on the digital and intelligent transformation of small and medium-sized cotton textile enterprises took place here, reflecting the urgency of shifting from scale-driven to efficiency-driven growth in the entire industrial cluster.

The Hard Power and Weaknesses of the Industrial Cluster

Changle specializes in polyester-cotton blended yarn, recycled cellulose fiber blended yarn, and differentiated chemical fiber yarn, with leading enterprises creating a strong cluster effect. However, public industry data shows that SMEs commonly face structural weaknesses such as data silos, outdated equipment, and rough management. During the event, expert teams visited six representative companies including Zhengxin Textile, Xingyi Textile, Keda Textile, Yaxin Textile, Lihua Smart Textile, and Liyuan Textile to assess their production operations. This indicates that Changle's transformation is not a top-down directive but a precise diagnosis based on frontline pain points.

For enterprises, digital and intelligent transformation is no longer a choice but a matter of survival. In the polyester-cotton blended yarn niche, scale was once Changle's moat. But as upstream raw material prices fluctuate and downstream orders migrate to lower-cost regions, relying solely on capacity expansion is no longer viable. Jing Shenquan, Vice President of the China Cotton Textile Association, clearly stated in his summary that Changle's advantage lies in its leading position in the chemical fiber blended yarn market, but this position needs to be strengthened through digital transformation.

Technology Pathways: From Machine Renewal to System Upgrades

The technical solutions disclosed at the event show a clear hierarchy. Jiangsu Haima Textile Machinery Co., Ltd. proposed a strategy of 'machine renewal and system upgrade,' focusing on intelligent collective doffing systems for ring spinning frames, intelligent tray feeding systems for winding machines, and spinning-winding linking technology. These technologies have been implemented in several enterprises, with the core logic being to reduce labor dependency through automation at the equipment level while achieving full-process data connectivity through system-level integration.

For Changle's SMEs, this gradual transformation is more feasible than a one-step 'unmanned factory.' The retrofit of a single ring spinning frame with collective doffing typically takes less than a week, with a payback period of 12 to 18 months. The application of spinning-winding linking technology can directly reduce labor in intermediate handling, which is particularly significant in Fujian's coastal areas where labor costs are rising.

On the digital management side, the focus is on operational soft power. Zhou Yejun, former Party Secretary of Wuxi No.1 Cotton Mill, emphasized in her report that enterprises need to break down data silos, restructure business processes, and achieve lean upgrades and full-chain resilience. This means Changle enterprises must look beyond equipment connectivity rates and see whether data can be translated into decisions for production scheduling optimization, inventory reduction, and energy consumption control.

Dual Variables: Raw Materials and Markets

Changle's product structure makes it highly dependent on non-cotton fibers. Professor Yan Taohai from Minjiang University systematically reviewed the current status of new flexible fiber technologies, including synthetic fiber modification, recycled cellulose fiber, recycled protein fiber, and smart and functional fibers. These technological directions directly relate to whether Changle enterprises can upgrade from conventional polyester-cotton blends to high-value differentiated products. For example, the gross margin of recycled cellulose fiber blended yarn is typically 8 to 12 percentage points higher than that of ordinary polyester-cotton yarn, but only if the spinning process matches the fiber's physical properties.

Market-side pressures are equally significant. Researcher Liu Qiannan from Galaxy Futures pointed out that the global economic slowdown will suppress consumption expectations, but geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz could raise production costs and shift some orders back to China. This presents a dual challenge for Changle enterprises: increased volatility in raw material costs and rising uncertainty in export markets. To cope, enterprises can use futures hedging for inventory management and cost locking. However, SME participation in futures markets remains low, mainly due to a lack of professional talent and insufficient credit lines.

Practical Recommendations

For Purchasers - Prioritize suppliers with completed digital transformation: Enterprises that have implemented spinning-winding linking technology typically offer more stable delivery times and lower defect rates. - Use basis pricing to lock in costs: During periods of raw material price volatility, sign basis contracts with Changle suppliers that have hedging capabilities to mitigate price risk.

For Foreign Trade Companies - Seize the window for order repatriation: If the Strait of Hormuz situation continues, Middle Eastern and European buyers may turn to China, making Changle's blended yarns competitive in terms of cost-performance. - Verify suppliers' digital maturity: Require partner factories to provide hard metrics such as equipment connectivity rates and data collection coverage to assess their capacity flexibility and quality stability.
