The benchmark price of polyester staple fiber (PSF) stood at 7,452.12 yuan per ton as of June 29, 2026, down 4.85% from the start of the month. While still 19% above the 12-month low of 6,267 yuan per ton, it has retreated about 11.6% from the peak of 8,426 yuan per ton. This level sits near the annual median of 7,346.6 yuan, signaling a market that lacks both strong downside momentum and rapid rebound catalysts.
For the textile industry, PSF price movements are not isolated. As a key raw material for cotton-like fabrics, nonwovens, and filling materials, its trajectory directly impacts downstream fabric costs and final garment pricing. Over the past 12 months, PSF experienced a rapid surge of over 34% from its low to high, followed by a gradual correction in the first half of 2026. This 'sharp rise, slow decline' pattern has significantly increased the difficulty of inventory management across the value chain.
Supply-Demand Dynamics Enter a Critical Window
The current price reflects a delicate balance between supply and demand. Upstream, prices of raw materials like PTA and MEG softened in Q2, weakening cost support for PSF. Meanwhile, operating rates at major Chinese PSF producers remain around 70%, with new capacity releases slowing down — a passive response to price pressure and a reflection of cautious demand expectations.
Downstream demand shows divergence. Traditional textile and apparel orders have not recovered as strongly as anticipated, particularly in export markets where major consuming countries face high inventory levels. However, demand in nonwovens and home textile filling segments remains relatively stable, partially offsetting the weakness in apparel fabrics. Industry data shows that apparent consumption of PSF grew less than 2% year-on-year in H1 2026, far below the 7% growth in the same period of 2025, indicating cooling procurement intentions.
Mid-Range Fluctuations May Become the New Normal
Given the wide price band over the past year — a range of 2,158.85 yuan per ton — the current mid-range position may not be transient. Historically, when PSF prices fall to the 7,200-7,500 yuan per ton range, it often corresponds to the breakeven line for many small and medium-sized spinning mills, providing technical support. The key for textile enterprises now is to monitor inventory cycle signals. A shift from destocking to restocking will require tangible improvement in downstream orders.
