China's polyester filament yarn market is quietly locked in a tug-of-war. On June 29, industry data showed polyester FDY (150D/96F, semi-dull AA grade) was quoted at 8300 yuan/ton in Hangzhou and 8350 yuan/ton in Shaoxing, two major chemical fiber hubs in Zhejiang Province. This price level has been range-bound for nearly three weeks, lacking the seasonal volatility typically seen in previous years.

The Supply-Demand Logic Behind the Stalled Price

The 8300 yuan/ton level may seem uneventful, but it carries multiple industrial pressures. On the cost side, upstream PTA prices have oscillated in a narrow 5500-5600 yuan/ton range due to crude oil volatility, providing rigid cost support for polyester FDY. On the demand side, downstream weaving mill operating rates have declined from their May peak, especially among small and medium-sized mills in Shaoxing and Xiaoshan, where order shortages have significantly dampened purchasing appetite.

Rongsheng Petrochemical, as a leading integrated PTA-polyester producer, sets a benchmark with its 8300 yuan/ton quote. This price reflects both the company's reluctance to cut margins and its cautiously optimistic outlook for peak season demand in Q3. In contrast, Juxing Chemical's 8350 yuan/ton offer, 50 yuan higher, reflects minor regional freight differences and customer mix variations rather than a trend signal.

Notably, the 150D/96F specification is a high-volume FDY grade, primarily used in water-jet looms for conventional fabrics like polyester taffeta and pongee. The flat price indicates extremely limited bargaining room for downstream grey fabric mills in raw material procurement.

Regional Dynamics: Hangzhou vs. Shaoxing

Hangzhou and Shaoxing together account for over 40% of national FDY capacity. Despite the seemingly identical price levels, the business logic behind them differs. Rongsheng's pricing leans toward a cost-plus model, leveraging its >90% upstream self-sufficiency in PX-PTA-polyester. Its 8300 yuan/ton quote aims to maintain reasonable margins in the polyester segment rather than reflecting true market supply-demand balance. Conversely, Juxing Chemical, as an independent polyester producer, prices closer to real transaction levels, and its 8350 yuan/ton suggests that downstream demand hasn't collapsed.

This divergence means buyers with bulk negotiating power may secure prices nearer to cost from integrated producers, while those purchasing smaller quantities should rely more on independent quotes.

Implications for Q3 Fabric Procurement Costs

The current FDY price plateau offers a rare decision-making window for downstream fabric buyers. Historically, July-August is a traditional off-season for polyester filament yarn. However, this year is different: upstream PTA plants have scheduled maintenance in July, potentially tightening supply, while downstream weaving mills generally hold low inventories. Once orders pick up, restocking demand could be unleashed rapidly.

This suggests the 8300 yuan/ton FDY price is more likely to break upward than downward in Q3. For buyers needing conventional fabrics like taffeta, pongee, or oxford, the current level offers some value in locking in costs.

On the other hand, foreign trade companies must account for the combined impact of exchange rate fluctuations and export tax rebate policies. Every 100 yuan/ton increase in FDY translates to roughly 0.5 yuan/meter added cost for standard taffeta, a significant burden given already thin margins on export orders.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - If downstream orders show no clear recovery by mid-July, consider small, phased purchases to avoid inventory overhang - Monitor Rongsheng's quote as a cost floor benchmark; if it proactively lowers prices, be alert for broader market downside risk - For Q3 delivery contracts, lock in 30%-50% of raw material needs within the 8300-8350 yuan/ton range

For Foreign Trade Companies - Adopt floating price mechanisms in contracts, linking selling prices to raw material cost fluctuations - Leverage the current two-way volatility in the RMB exchange rate to pre-settle forex and lock in procurement costs - Track PTA maintenance plans in July; if maintenance exceeds expectations, FDY prices could start rising before August
