PTA prices are undergoing a structural correction. As of June 30, the spot benchmark price stood at 5,785.66 yuan/mt, down 7.56% from the beginning of the month and over 16% from the year's high of 6,932.90 yuan/mt. More notably, this level is near the one-year median of 5,648.08 yuan, with the upper and lower gaps narrowing to about 1,400 yuan, signaling a shift from volatile swings to balanced competition.
Price Range Narrows, Volatility Logic Shifts
Annual data shows PTA prices oscillated between 4,363.25 yuan and 6,932.90 yuan, with the current level sitting near the median. The top-side gap of -1,147.24 yuan and bottom-side gap of 1,422.41 yuan form a nearly symmetrical structure, rare over the past year. Typically, the further the price deviates from the median, the stronger the pullback force; now near the median, neither bulls nor bears have overwhelming drivers.
A daily gain of 0.90%, though modest, suggests the market is seeking a new anchor after a continuous decline. For downstream polyester buyers, this means shifting from panic restocking to phased, demand-based procurement.
Weakening Cost Support, PX Capacity Expansion as Key Variable
The primary driver of PTA's decline comes from upstream. From late 2025 to 2026, several large PX projects in China have come on stream, completely reversing the tight supply situation. Falling PX prices have eroded PTA's cost support, weakening the traditional 'PX up → PTA up' transmission chain.
At the same time, PTA capacity continues to expand. Although industry operating rates remain at 75%-80%, new production volumes exert continuous pressure. Particularly in Q2, after maintenance, some PTA units restarted, increasing supply-side flexibility and further capping price rebounds.
Downstream Demand: Dual Test of Polyester Load and End-Order
Downstream polyester operating rates saw minor fluctuations in June, with some polyester filament and staple fiber plants cutting loads due to inventory pressure. End-textile order recovery fell short of expectations, especially foreign trade orders affected by overseas inventory cycles and exchange rate volatility, showing 'small, short, urgent' order patterns and more flexible raw material procurement.
This means PTA prices cannot count on strong demand pull. Even if periodic restocking occurs, it is mostly speculative buying at low prices rather than sustained improvement in real demand.
Outlook: Median Oscillation as New Normal
Overall, PTA prices are likely to oscillate in the 5,600-5,900 yuan/mt range. An upward breakout requires a PX cost rebound or a significant polyester load increase, but neither signal is clear yet. A downward breakout needs more negative catalysts, such as a crude oil crash or unexpected PTA capacity additions.
For industry participants, the current price level offers a relatively balanced window. Both upstream hedging and downstream inventory management require more refined strategies rather than reliance on single-direction trends.
