The price of viscose staple fiber is standing at a one-year high, yet the market is far from euphoric. On June 30, industry data showed the benchmark price of viscose staple fiber 1.2D settled at 14,200 CNY/ton, up 1% from the beginning of the year but with zero daily change. This indicates that prices have entered a consolidation phase at elevated levels, intensifying the tug-of-war between upstream and downstream players.
Price Position and Volatility Characteristics
From an annual statistical perspective, the current price of 14,200 CNY/ton marks the highest point of the past year, placing it firmly in the upper range. The lowest point occurred in mid-2025 at 12,800 CNY/ton, a difference of 1,400 CNY/ton and an amplitude exceeding 10%. The median of 13,500 CNY/ton suggests that most of the year prices traded in the 13,000-13,500 range, meaning the current level has clearly deviated from the center.
More notably, this price not only represents a one-year high but also triggers warnings of 'overbought for 1 year,' 'overbought for 2 years,' and 'overbought for 3 years.' This implies that viscose staple fiber prices have been structurally elevated for several consecutive years, driven not by short-term demand-supply pulses but by deeper factors. The annual average of 13,197.49 CNY/ton, with a gap of over 1,000 CNY from the current price, further confirms this point.
Industry Transmission and Upstream-Downstream Dynamics
For upstream chemical fiber producers, high prices mean expanded profit margins, but the zero daily change signals growing resistance to further hikes. Downstream spinning mills and fabric manufacturers face cost pressures—viscose staple fiber accounts for over 70% of the cost of rayon yarn, meaning every 100 CNY/ton increase in raw material raises yarn costs by approximately 70 CNY/ton. At current levels, downstream buyers have shifted to just-in-time replenishment rather than stockpiling.
Looking at regional industrial clusters, capacity utilization in major viscose-producing areas like Xinjiang, Shandong, and Jiangsu remains high, but inventory levels are beginning to rise. Meanwhile, downstream clusters such as Nantong home textiles, Shengze weaving, and Keqiao dyeing have notably slowed their procurement of viscose-based raw materials. This state of 'upstream running at full capacity, downstream watching from the sidelines' is a classic hallmark of a price plateau.
Long-Term Trends and Price Outlook
The three-year consecutive price rally in viscose staple fiber is the result of multiple factors: the cotton substitution effect, dissolving pulp cost support, and environmental production curbs. However, current prices are approaching the ceiling of downstream affordability. If final apparel consumption fails to grow in tandem, the risk of a price correction is accumulating.
For textile industry professionals, what deserves attention is not just the absolute price but also the narrowing of price volatility. With daily changes at zero and annual amplitude compressing from over 20% in past years to around 10%, the market is waiting for a new directional signal—whether it be a fresh wave of restocking demand or a loosening on the cost side.
