The benchmark price of viscose staple fiber 1.2D hit 14,200 CNY/ton at the end of June 2026, marking the highest level in the past 12 months and a new three-year peak. The price has risen 1,400 CNY from the year's low of 12,800 CNY, representing an increase of nearly 11%.

Signals Behind the Price Peak

The current price is 700 CNY above the median of 13,500 CNY, indicating the market has moved beyond a moderate fluctuation range. Industry data shows the average price over the past year was 13,197.49 CNY, meaning the current level is about 7.6% above average. This implies significantly higher replenishment costs for buyers who did not lock in long-term contracts at lower prices earlier in the year.

The upward trajectory from 12,800 to 14,200 CNY has been consistent without notable corrections. Such a pattern often points to supply-side tightening—either from firm dissolving pulp prices or from viscose staple fiber producers leveraging environmental restrictions or maintenance shutdowns to support prices.

Real-World Resistance in the Supply Chain

For spinning mills, viscose staple fiber accounts for 60%-70% of the cost of rayon yarn. Every 1,000 CNY increase in fiber price adds about 600-700 CNY to yarn costs. However, the rayon yarn market has not seen equivalent price hikes, meaning margins for weaving and dyeing stages are being squeezed.

On the demand side, while apparel retail data for the first half of 2026 shows recovery, growth is concentrated in sportswear and outdoor categories, with no significant surge in orders for traditional rayon-based garments. This moderate demand recovery cannot fully support the sharp rise in raw material prices. The situation of "hot upstream, cold downstream" may trigger a price correction unless new supply disruptions or cost-push factors emerge.

Regional Industrial Cluster Responses

In major textile hubs like Keqiao and Shengze, inquiries for viscose-based materials have increased, but actual transaction volumes have not kept pace. Buyers are adopting a "procure as needed, small batches with quick turnaround" strategy to avoid building inventory at high prices. This cautious approach is unusual for the June-July period, which traditionally marks the start of pre-season stockpiling for the "Golden September and Silver October" peak season.

Nantong's home textile base, which relies less on viscose staple fiber and has access to stable alternatives like polyester staple fiber, has not been significantly affected. This shows that the impact of viscose price hikes varies greatly across different downstream sectors.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - The risk of chasing prices at current levels is high; prioritize using existing inventory and shorten new order price-lock periods to 15 days or less. - Monitor dissolving pulp price trends and viscose staple fiber industry operating rates. If operating rates fall below 70%, consider increasing procurement volumes moderately. - Negotiate floating pricing clauses with suppliers to share price volatility risks across the chain.

For Mills - Adjust product mix by increasing the share of polyester-viscose blends or pure polyester products to reduce reliance on a single raw material. - Include raw material price fluctuation clauses in order contracts, incorporating cost increments when viscose staple fiber exceeds 14,000 CNY/ton into the pricing formula. - Use futures or forward contracts to lock in some raw material costs, paying attention to the correlation between Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange cotton yarn futures and viscose staple fiber.
