After months of continuous decline, the benchmark price of nylon DTY settled at 15,840 yuan/ton in early July. Although still down 4.81% from the previous month, this level represents a recovery of over 2,200 yuan from the annual low of 13,560 yuan. Crucially, the current price sits just below the one-year midpoint of 16,260 yuan, signaling a transition from a one-sided downtrend to a bottoming-out phase. For fabric mills and traders relying on nylon filament, this is both a risk point and a window of opportunity.

The Chain Logic Behind the Price Signal

On the cost side, upstream caprolactam prices have weakened steadily since Q2, directly eroding cost support for nylon DTY. Over the past year, nylon DTY prices ranged from a high of 18,960 yuan/ton to a low of 13,560 yuan, a volatility band exceeding 5,000 yuan. The current price of 15,840 yuan, while not an extreme low, stands about 5.4% above the annual average of 15,032 yuan, suggesting the market has not fallen into full pessimism.

From the demand perspective, sluggish downstream weaving and apparel procurement remain the primary drag. Fabric hubs like Keqiao and Shengze have reported slower turnover of nylon grey fabrics, with rising inventories prompting mills to adopt a cautious stance on raw material purchases. However, a notable development is the emergence of opportunistic buying as prices approach the annual low, evidenced by stable daily price changes alongside a modest uptick in transaction volumes.

Regional Capacity Adjustments

Operating rates across nylon clusters are diverging. In Changle, Fujian, nylon texturing mills are running at around 60% capacity due to insufficient orders, while in Nantong, Jiangsu, producers focusing on home textile-grade nylon filaments enjoy higher utilization thanks to steady demand for differentiated products. This regional disparity is forcing a structural shift—margins on standard-grade products have been squeezed to near zero, while functional and micro-denier nylon items still command a premium.

Looking at annual statistics, the gap from the current price to the yearly high is -3,120 yuan, while the gap to the low is +2,280 yuan, indicating that downside risk is relatively limited. However, the anticipated release of new caprolactam capacity in Q3 will test the nylon chain's resilience once again.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Build safety stocks equivalent to 30%-50% of monthly consumption at current mid-low price levels to avoid panic buying during sudden spikes. - Monitor price spreads between the Changle and Nantong production hubs; regional freight differentials can be amplified by price volatility, making nearby sourcing more cost-effective. - Negotiate long-term contracts that link nylon DTY prices to caprolactam futures or spot indices, locking in processing margins rather than absolute prices.

For Exporters - Set FOB base prices at 8%-12% above the domestic benchmark, but continuously cross-check against Southeast Asian local market prices to avoid mispricing. - Factor in RMB exchange rate fluctuations—every 1% depreciation in the yuan expands export margins by approximately 150 yuan/ton at current price levels. - Take advantage of the relatively low domestic price environment to sign forward delivery contracts with overseas clients, locking in raw material costs and hedging against potential price rebounds in H2.
