Polyester POY 150D/48F semi-dull varieties showed a typical narrow fluctuation pattern in quotations on July 1. According to publicly available industry data, ex-factory prices from major East China suppliers ranged between 8,050 and 8,400 CNY per ton, a spread of just 350 CNY. While this spread level is not unusual in the recent market, the underlying signals of regional divergence and capacity competition deserve close scrutiny from the supply chain.

Regional Spreads and Supplier Strategies

Looking at the quotation distribution, Juxing Chemical in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, offered a low of 8,050 CNY/ton, while Tongkun Group in Hangzhou quoted as high as 8,400 CNY/ton—a mere 100 kilometers apart but a price gap of 4.3%. This intra-regional price dispersion typically reflects differences in inventory pressure, sales strategy, and raw material procurement costs among factories. Major players like Rongsheng Petrochemical and Kaishi Group quoted in the 8,200-8,300 CNY/ton range, occupying a middle-to-high position and showing relative pricing stability from leading firms. For buyers, this means the market is not monolithic, offering clear room for negotiation and price comparison.

Supply-Demand Tug-of-War: Capacity Release vs. Weak Demand

The narrow fluctuation essentially results from a balance of supply and demand forces. On the supply side, with the restart of previously idled units and the gradual ramp-up of new capacity, spot supply of polyester POY in East China has become more plentiful. However, operating rates of downstream weaving and texturing mills have not recovered in tandem, and weak orders for end-use apparel and home textiles have kept POY procurement largely for immediate needs, with little appetite for speculative stockpiling. This 'rising supply, stable demand' scenario leaves prices with neither the momentum for a sustained rally nor the depth for a sharp decline, supported by costs. Notably, feedstock PTA and MEG prices are also range-bound, further capping POY price elasticity.

Practical Implications for Buyers and Exporters

The current pricing environment dictates different strategies for different market participants.

For Buyers - **Lock in Shaoxing low-end sources**: The 8,050 CNY/ton quote in Shaoxing offers a clear cost advantage. If quality meets production requirements, prioritize signing monthly framework agreements with suppliers like Juxing Chemical to lock in current low prices. - **Monitor large mill pricing pace**: Quotations from giants like Rongsheng and Tongkun often serve as bellwethers. If their quotes soften, it may signal a downward shift in the overall price center, at which point buyers can moderately increase procurement volumes.

For Exporters - **Watch FX risk**: Current RMB exchange rate volatility significantly impacts dollar-denominated export orders. Every 100 CNY fluctuation in POY price per ton can be magnified by FX changes in export costs. Consider adding FX adjustment clauses in long-term contracts. - **Optimize costs using regional spreads**: Use different supplier quotes as leverage in negotiations with main suppliers to secure better prices. Also, factor in logistics costs from Ningbo and Shanghai ports to calculate landed costs comprehensively.
