Viscose staple fiber prices have reached their highest level in a year, yet the market has not seen panic buying. The benchmark price of 14,200 RMB/ton has remained flat since early July, with zero daily fluctuation—a silent standoff between supply and demand.
Behind the Price Curve
Over the past 12 months, viscose staple fiber 1.2D has completed a full upward cycle from 12,800 RMB/ton to 14,200 RMB/ton. The current level is not only a one-year high but also touches the three-year overbought warning line. If prices rise further, they would break the recent price range, materially impacting downstream spinning and weaving costs.
Notably, the current price is about 5.2% above the annual median of 13,500 RMB/ton and about 7.5% above the annual average of 13,204 RMB/ton. This deviation is unusual among chemical fiber varieties, suggesting the rally is driven by deeper industrial logic rather than mere market sentiment.
On the cost side, upstream raw materials such as dissolving pulp and caustic soda have all risen over the past year, accumulating cost pressure for viscose producers. Meanwhile, concentrated maintenance shutdowns of some viscose units in the second half of 2025 tightened supply, supporting the price increase.
Chain Transmission and Game
For downstream yarn mills, 14,200 RMB/ton viscose means an additional cost of about 1,400 RMB per ton compared to last year. Whether this cost can be passed down to fabric and apparel depends on end-consumer demand.
In terms of procurement rhythm, the market is now in a critical window for autumn-winter fabric stocking. If viscose prices remain high, some small and medium weaving mills may postpone purchases or switch to alternatives like polyester staple fiber or cotton yarn. Such substitution, if scaled, would curb subsequent viscose demand.
For viscose producers, the high price improves margins but also raises concerns about downstream resistance and inventory buildup. Industry data shows that viscose operating rates rebounded above 85% in Q2 2026, with supply gradually increasing, potentially tipping the balance.
Market Outlook and Direction
From a statistical perspective, the current price sits at the upper edge of the annual range and has failed to break out for weeks. This technical pattern often signals the market is searching for a new direction. Without fresh bullish catalysts, a pullback is possible.
Chinese customs data shows that viscose staple fiber exports grew about 8% YoY in H1 2026, but export prices rose less than domestic prices, indicating persistent competition in international markets. Domestic demand from home textiles and apparel remains stable but with slower growth.
Overall, the viscose market is at a sensitive node where upstream cost support and downstream affordability are in a tug-of-war. The outcome will likely determine price direction in the next one to two months.
