At mid-year, the PTA benchmark price has settled at 5,777.83 yuan per ton, placing it exactly at the midpoint of the yearly price range. For the chemical fiber industry chain, a mid-range price often signals a critical inflection point—where the next move, up or down, will trigger a cascade of reactions from polyester chips to polyester filament yarn to grey fabrics.
What the Price Position Reveals
According to publicly available data from China Customs and the chemical fiber industry, over the past year, PTA hit a low of 4,363.25 yuan per ton and a high of 6,932.90 yuan per ton, with a midpoint of 5,648.08 yuan per ton. The current price of 5,777.83 yuan per ton sits slightly above the midpoint but has fallen 0.78% from the beginning of the month at 5,823.00 yuan per ton.
The structure of the price range shows a top-to-midpoint gap of 1,155.07 yuan per ton and a bottom-to-midpoint gap of 1,414.58 yuan per ton, indicating roughly symmetrical upside and downside potential. This means the current price is not at an extreme—neither a bargain buying opportunity nor a window for chasing gains.
The full-year average price of 5,358.78 yuan per ton is below the current level, suggesting the first-half cost base was generally lower. If demand fails to pick up meaningfully in the second half, PTA prices may revert toward the average, squeezing profit margins in the polyester segment.
Transmission to Downstream Polyester and Weaving
PTA is the core raw material for polyester chips and polyester filament yarn, and its price fluctuations ripple through the chain. The current mid-range price means polyester mills face a relatively comfortable but uncompetitive raw material procurement cost.
For polyester filament yarn clusters in Shengze, Changxing, and Xiuzhou, further PTA weakness would directly lower production costs. However, end-use weaving mills would not necessarily benefit, as finished fabric prices are influenced more by supply-demand dynamics and often adjust with a lag.
Market feedback from the Keqiao Textile City indicates that grey fabric turnover is sluggish, with traders preferring to wait and see. The mid-range PTA price has intensified a wait-and-see mentality across the chain—no one wants to stock up heavily before the direction becomes clear.
Dual Considerations for Exporters: Exchange Rates and Costs
For textile exporters, the significance of PTA price movements must be interpreted alongside exchange rate fluctuations. If the renminbi remains stable, lower PTA costs help maintain competitive export quotes; conversely, small cost changes can be amplified by currency moves.
Current PTA prices are more than 15% below the historical peak of 6,932.90 yuan per ton but still 32% above the low of 4,363.25 yuan per ton. When signing forward export orders, companies should focus on the PTA futures forward curve rather than spot prices alone.
