PTA prices are currently hovering in a sensitive mid-range zone, with a spread of over 1,000 yuan per ton from both the annual high and low, yet just a step away from falling to the year's lowest point. The 6.8% mid-year decline reflects an imbalance in profit distribution across the polyester chain and cautious market expectations for demand recovery in the second half of the year.
Price Mid-Range and Profit Game
According to industry public data, as of July 2, 2026, the PTA benchmark price stood at 5,777.83 yuan per ton, down 0.78% from the beginning of the month and 16.6% below the 12-month high of 6,932.90 yuan per ton. The current price sits near the median of the past year's range (4,363.25 yuan to 6,932.90 yuan), with a median value of 5,648.08 yuan. This means PTA has neither entered a deep loss territory nor generated excess profits for processors.
Notably, the spread between PTA and upstream PX is narrowing. At current PTA prices and estimated average processing costs, the processing margins for some older units are approaching breakeven. For PTA plants relying heavily on long-term contracts, cash flow remains intact, but the pace of new capacity additions may slow.
Industry Impact: Capacity Consolidation and Regional Divergence
PTA's mid-range volatility benefits downstream polyester producers. Stable raw material costs for polyester filament and staple fiber help maintain positive cash flow. However, this also means PTA producers struggle to pass cost pressure upstream to PX, with profits concentrating at both ends of the chain (PX and polyester).
Regionally, operating rates in major PTA producing areas like Zhejiang and Jiangsu are diverging. Large integrated refineries with high PX self-sufficiency can sustain high utilization, while smaller PTA units reliant on purchased PX face greater pressure for maintenance shutdowns. This divergence will accelerate capacity consolidation, with an estimated 1-1.5 million tons of old capacity expected to exit the market in the second half of the year.
