The price of polyester staple fiber (PSF) is undergoing a notable correction. According to publicly available industry data from July 2, 2026, the benchmark price has fallen to 7311.29 CNY/ton, a decline of 1.45% from the beginning of the month. This level sits near the midpoint of the price range observed over the past year, where the median is 7346.6 CNY/ton. For textile enterprises, this means raw material cost pressures have eased compared to last year's highs, but whether the market has bottomed out remains to be seen.

Price Range and Market Position

Over the past full year (July 2025 to July 2026), PSF prices have fluctuated widely between 6267.17 and 8426.02 CNY/ton, a spread of over 2100 CNY. The current price of 7311.29 CNY/ton is slightly below the median. Notably, the annual average price is 6965.50 CNY/ton, meaning the current level is still about 5% above the average. This indicates that while prices have retreated from their peak, the overall cost base remains elevated compared to previous years, and the industry has not returned to a low-cost environment.

From the peak of 8426 CNY/ton to the current level, the decline exceeds 13%. This correction has been driven by easing upstream costs for PTA and MEG, as well as tepid downstream demand for textiles in late Q2. For chemical fiber traders and yarn mills, the price falling back to the median zone signals that the risk of high-priced inventory is dissipating, but the timing for bottom-fishing remains uncertain.

Industry Transmission and Procurement Window

PSF is a key raw material for cotton-spun, blended yarns, and nonwovens. The price decline directly benefits downstream yarn and weaving mills' cost control. For a medium-sized factory producing 10,000 tons of pure polyester yarn annually, with a 30-day inventory turnover, the current price saves about 107 CNY per ton compared to the start of the month, reducing monthly raw material costs by over 100,000 CNY. For SMEs with thin margins, this is a tangible improvement.

However, the downward trend also introduces uncertainty. Downstream buyers tend to adopt a 'wait-and-see' approach when prices fall, preferring to consume existing stocks rather than place new orders. This behavior can exacerbate short-term demand weakness, putting further downward pressure on prices. Given that the current price is still 1044 CNY above the annual low, further declines toward the average cannot be ruled out in Q3.

For exporters, exchange rate fluctuations and diverging overseas demand are larger macro factors. The PSF price drop helps improve the price competitiveness of Chinese textiles in markets like Southeast Asia and Africa. However, if overseas clients anticipate further price decreases, they may demand renegotiation of contracts, compressing export margins.

Practical Recommendations

For Procurement Managers - At the current price level near the median, maintain regular monthly purchases aligned with production needs to avoid stockout risks from excessive waiting. - If cash flow permits, consider building a 1-2 month safety stock when the price falls below 7000 CNY/ton to lock in lower costs. - Closely monitor upstream PTA plant maintenance schedules and crude oil trends, as these are core cost drivers for PSF.

For Export Firms - Include price adjustment clauses in long-term contracts with overseas clients to hedge against sharp raw material cost fluctuations. - Use the current price window to lock in exchange rates and raw material costs for existing orders, preventing margin erosion from dual volatility. - Track capacity utilization rates of competitors in Southeast Asia; if local prices decline in tandem, adjust pricing strategies early to maintain market share.
